After this movie I've determined that I just do not think Mike Flanagan is a good director. This movie has some interesting ideas and starts off smarter than your average supernatural horror film, but goes off the rails in the end and ends up making almost no sense. Kate Bosworth and Jacob Tremblay give solid performances though. C

This was good in the first act, decent in second but outright pathetic in the final act. Bosworth does good here but her character is not allowed to evolve enough. Tremblay confirms that he isn't just a one hit wonder, I am excited to see his future films specially once he grows up.

I wouldn't call the movie horror but it has great atmosphere, the movie is supposed to cheap thus the nightmare/thing is not shown enough here or made scary.

4/10

This is such a confused film. First of all, it's a (supernatural?) drama, barely a horror. Which isn't a problem but with the trailer and the poster it definitely throws you off from what you're expecting. That being said it feels more like a demo for a movie. A demo that promises and has something for itself but now you expect the crew to go back and do a proper job - develop the story, characters, set up scenes better etc. It's really idiotic if you need to have couple of minutes of monologue at the end to "explain" the movie. You know you didn't do a good job with the story if that's how you plan on ending it.

So, it's a shame this movie ended up like this. It definitely could've been a decent fun movie.

Another slow one from Flanagan. I'm enjoying checking out his filmography. But it definitely doesn't help that I'm watching this late at night after already being tired. Anyway, this won't sit long in the memory. It has a decent story and scary demon/monster, if underutilized. The Cancer Man and the way he is formed feels original. There are other parts of the film that don't feel right, such as the way they treat a new arrival foster child. They are not parent material at all! Regarding the cast; I think the casting of Tremblay should have been for Shaun, not Cody. They should have switched child actors. The cuter of the two should always be the dead son. Bosworth and Jane basically sleepwalk through the film. C-
