Very underrated movie. I bet I am the only one on the board that has seen this movie too, and that's a shame. It's story of freedom and redemption. It's such a touching film with fantastic musical numbers. It could very well be a musical, or just a drama with a little music thrown in, but either way it is an amazing film. Whoppi Goldberg is amazing in her role, but the real standout for me was Leleti Khumalo, she is brilliant, and sings very well. Sarafina is a very wise and uplifting films. Some scenes are just unbearable for me watch, but it doesn't take away from the pure heart and soul of this movie. I wish more people would take the time to see it. It deals with some serious issues, that should definitely be looked at a lot more than they are. I wish they made more movies like this.

Oddly enough, I was just thinking of Goldberg the other day and remembered this movie. I was going to ask people what they thought of it. I think its quite good, and neither condemns or condones violence as part of the struggle against apartheid. I found the musical numbers to be quite appropriate and refreshing, firstly because they set a back drop for Sarafina's desire to be an American movie star, and secondly because music is a hige part of African culture. This movie is uplifting and depressing at the same time, which is the only way it could be successful. Their youth's idealism for the return of Mandella seems bittersweet in retrospect, and I like how Sarafina didn't finish with a bright little exclamation point. I agree, underrated.

B+ for now, but mostly because I haven't seen it in years, and would need to rewatch it before giving anything too difinative. I wonder what happened to the lead actress there? She was quite incredible in her role, and I'd assume had a bright future in cinema.

Well she was in Hotel Rwanda, but I don't think she played a main character. She will also be in The Zulu this year, and it looks like she got the lead role. \:D/

Really? It made over 7 million in the Box Office in 1992. Whoopi Goldberg was in it. It was pretty smart and very political for a musical. Good music too (from what I remember).

7 million in limited release or wide?

If it was wide, that's pretty shitty. Even when adjusted, it'd still be like $12 million or so. And, it's not like anyone's going to remember Wicker Park,Chasing Liberty, or other $12 million grossers in 2016.

Well, i went to BOM, but can only get opening weekend numbers because I don't have gold pass or whatever. I don't know other sites to get info from.

So if it only opened on two screens, something tells me it was a limited release. That's almmost 40,000/theatre there.
