 Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason
Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason Quote: Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason is a 2004 British romantic comedy film directed by Beeban Kidron, based on Helen Fielding's novel of the same name. It stars Renée Zellweger as Bridget Jones, Colin Firth as Mark Darcy and Hugh Grant as Daniel Cleaver. It is the sequel to Bridget Jones's Diary (2001). There are significant differences in the storylines between the novel and this film adaptation, and between the United States version and United Kingdom version of the film, including an alternate ending.

The original Bridget Jones's Diary (well, besides being my favorite contemporary novel) is one of my favorite movies. I wasn't expecting The Edge of Reason to be anywhere near as good as the first film (especially considering the sequel book wasn't). It definitely fell short of the first movie, but I still liked it a lot. Other than the ludicrous, melodramatic prison sequences (which were also in the book, so I can't really complain), I thought Bridget Jones 2 was humorous and cute. Although Renee Zellweger's British accent is not as consistent this time, the performance is yet again on the mark. Colin Firth and Hugh Grant are both good, although each seem to have smaller roles this time around (especially Grant). Overall, Bridget Jones 2 put a smile on my face. B+

I saw it on the plane on my way to Califnornia. It was a cute comedy, but I liked the original much more. Still fun. B

I agree with Libs and Zach. While the first is one of my favorite romantic comedies ever, this is nowhere near as good. It's still fun though, so I rate it a B. One other strange comment - I thought Zellweger looked better in the first than her normal super thin self, but the extra weight this time made her look tired.

{Original review from November 2004: }
This TV movie quality follow-up to the original Bridget Jones was entertaining enough as a fluffy bauble. If it weren't for the classic characters portrayed by solid comic actors (esp. she-can-do-no-wrong Rene!) this would be an entirely forgetable slapstick chick flick. But as it is, definitely worth seeing if you enjoyed the first one.
3 out of 5.

I seriously LOVE the first film and can watch it over and over again.
But i didn't enjoy this one as much. This one was a bit too slapstick and the script wasn't as witty and snappy. Zellwegger seriously glows in this role though and is fantastic in both films.
I say B/B-

 Re: Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason
When I first watched this I liked it better than the original. But then I re-watched that and my opinion reversed. I still loved this though. It's really cute and funny and Zellweger is again great. I really hope the third will happen.
8/10 (A-)

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason
Not a patch on the first. It felt more directed towards women than the first movie, and that made it lose something special. It also felt more like an exercise in manipulating the Bridget Jones brand instead of making a clever British rom-com. It's also rather silly what happens in this compared to a relatively sweet first film. I cannot think for the life of me how two of the most perfect eligible bachelors see anything in Bridget Jones. They could both have supermodels, but they both seemingly love this weird, bunny-boiling, ugly chubster. I mean seriously, who after 8 weeks in a relationship raises the question of marriage and/or love?? She's mental. She reminded me of Glenn Close on more than one occasion. The film was without the laughs of the first, and that is mainly because it needed tons more Hugh Grant. He's pretty great and hilarious when he's on screen. There were also very few moments from the supporting cast that made Bridget Jones's Diary the rich comedy it is.
Hopefully I can forget this was ever made and just remember the first because that is a special film.
C+

I remember enjoying this when it was out in theaters but I rewatched it before the new one came out and it doesn't hold up well at all. The first and third are so much better.
