White Oleander
White OleanderQuote: White Oleander is a 2002 American drama film directed by Peter Kosminsky. The cast features Alison Lohman in the central role of Astrid Magnussen, and Michelle Pfeiffer as her temperamental mother Ingrid, alongside Robin Wright Penn, Renée Zellweger, Billy Connolly and Patrick Fugit in supporting roles.
The screenplay was adapted from the novel of the same name by Janet Fitch, which was selected for Oprah's Book Club in 1999.

WHITE OLEANDER tells the story of one girl's journey of self discovery after her mother is sent to prison and she goes through several different foster parents. Ambitious in its message, this film succeeds at times but at others it comes off like a cheesy television movie. However, Michelle Pfieffer gives a spectacular performance worthy of an Oscar nomination. The other performances are quite good as well, and this is enough to warrant a recommendation.

Michelle Pfieffer gives an Oscar worthy performance for which she wasn't even nominated. Robin Wright Penn and Renee Zellweger are also quite good, but Alison Lohman carries the movie with her strong performance. It's too bad the story itself isn't that great. It seems too choppy because of the constant character changes. It's still worth a look. My grade: B+.

Great movie. Though it does seem like one of those "ugh lifetime films" (it did air on lifetime I believe...), this has very strong performances, especially from Pfieffer and Alison Lohman (who I haven't seen in a while...). - B+/A-

Re: White Oleander
Very underrated drama. Terrific performances. Hadn't seen this in years. Was nice to re-visit it. Was funny seeing Melissa McCarthy pop up in it. Didn't realize she was in it.
