Face/Off

Quote:
Face/Off is a 1997 action film directed by John Woo, starring John Travolta and Nicolas Cage. The two both play an FBI agent and a terrorist, sworn enemies who assume the physical appearance of one another.

The film exemplifies gun fu and heroic bloodshed action sequences, and has Travolta and Cage each playing two personalities. It was the first Hollywood film in which Woo was given complete creative control and was acclaimed by both audiences and critics. Eventually grossing $245 million worldwide, Face/Off was a financial success, as well as Woo's highest-grossing American film.

I don't even have enough words to describe Face/Off. It's just so...fantastic.

Yes, it's technically not 'fantastic,' but I love it. It's my favorite pure action film of all-time, and brings almost every other action movie post-1997 to shame. It's *very* rare that we'll find another action film like Face/Off.

Love it to death. A+

Face/Off - B+

Action is amazing, story is amazing, hey the acting is also nice, but the mistake witgh them two on the boat really lets it down, only noticed that about my 5th viewing, but its fucked me off ever since. Got some of the best quotes in ever, i use them on a daily basis, quality.

A fun ride, awesome action and a totally ridiculous story that makes no sense at all, but manages to provide a lot of excitement - and that's what good Action cinema is about, isn't it? (B+)

It is impossible not to like this movie, in my opinion. Certainly the storyline is pretty illogical and unrealistic, but once you get beyond that part you actually get a well-acted, excellently paced action epic by John Woo who is at his peak with this movie. Whoever idea it was to pair John Travolta against Nicholas Cage was a genius because the pairing works very well. Both provide the good acting chops for their roles and the supporting cast is pretty good as well. Of course what stands out about the movie the most is the pitch-perfect action which is exciting and infinitely rewatchable for its every single moment. Despite its running time being well over two hours, Face-Off never slows down and never drags. The screenplay is pretty well-written (besides the whole changing faces part, ironically) and, well, what can I say about the action other than AWESOME?

Heh, a pretty awesome ride, though ultimately it does feel a bit hollow. The concept is so twisted and ridiculous, but it works in a way, really. It's a great setup for an action movie. Acting is strong from both the leads, I kind of wish Cage had more screentime as the baddie, because he was brilliant in the short time he got in there. The scene where he wakes up without his face, he is soooooo badass and and wicked. Kicks ass is the way to describe the movie, really.

Great Movie, and probably one of the best action films ever made. The acting made this film what it is, that at different points in the film you can hate the one actor then pull a 180 and completely symphasize with their world. John Woo's last good film.

A+

I was just watching Face/Off again, god this movie's awesome. Action directing doesn't get enough credit, Woo's work is totally brilliant here. And Travolta and Cage... chewing the scenery to perfection. Definitely in my top 50.

Holy shit. First time seeing this, didn't know what to expect, thought it was going to be another one of those ho-hum action movies with a ridiculous set-up but it was a fantastic action movie, don't know how many people still feel this way but I have to echo the OPs sentiments that it is bloody hard to top.

Either than the aforementioned set-up, which is unrealistic but also creepy as hell, the movie just never stops. It's not afraid to go anywhere. Real balls and what made it better was the calibre of Cage and Travolta. I heard they were going to cast Stallone and Schawznegeer and if so it would have never been what it was, hell that was also without Woo.

I'm not sure how rewatchable it will be since the psychological fucking is off the charts here but for a first time viewing it was aces.

I'm tempted to give it an A- but I'll stick with a B+, the psycho fucking is just on another level.

It was in my top 100 list that was posted some three years ago and it still probably is. Woo's best work in the USA.

I remember watching it in a theater back in 1997 and loving it. Still holds up well today and perhaps even more relevant.

I guess I'll be the first one to say I didn't love it as much as everyone else to give it an "A" range rating. The opening action scene is by far the best part of the whole film as we get good crazy Cage mixed in with solid, gripping suspense. After that though the film can never quite hold up and becomes the typical, somewhat engaging action film.

Ridiculous, but also absolutely badass. Travolta and Cage play off each other perfectly. The film holds up well.
