 Re: The Five-Year Engagement
This movie literally felt like it was 5 years long. Jeeeeeez. They need to get better editors for these Judd Apatow movies. Or at least have better material worth having 2 hours long. Bridesmaids was excellent and did not falter from its length 'cause it had a bunch of good stuff. This, not so much.

 Re: The Five-Year Engagement
An often hilarious, sweet-natured romantic comedy with highly appealing lead performances from Jason Segel and Emily Blunt. Additionally, the movie makes great use out of the hilarious Chris Pratt and Alison Brie in the main supporting roles. While I definitely enjoyed this movie a lot and was won over by it, it is definitely a bit overlong and could've used a tighter pace and shorter running time. That's my main complaint, and what prevents it from reaching the level of the last Segel/Stoller collaboration (Forgetting Sarah Marshall). Still, it's a really sweet movie with a nice heaping of laughs throughout. B+

THE FIVE YEAR ENGAGEMENT - 8/10 (B+)
Really cute movie. Blunt and Segel were very good together and are the main reason the movie works. It also had quite a few laugh-out-loud moments.

 Re: The Five-Year Engagement
It mostly feels overlong because so much happens. The movies very loosely constructed so it gets pretty messy at some points, and is kind of confusing and disjointed. I really enjoyed it a lot, when it clicked it clicked. All the supporting cast is solid, and the film really maintains humanity throughout comedy and ridiculousness. I also love the actual "wedding," hehe.

Exactly. If they don't know how to behave, and feel OK offending others, they get their ass kicked, so they'll think next time before opening their rotten mouths.

 Re: The Five-Year Engagement
Even the good Judd Apatow movies are too long. Whether he's producing, writing or directing. It's pretty remarkable that such a thing should be consistent across all these movies, since no one would suggest he has the same levels of involvement across the board.

 Re: The Five-Year Engagement
It's good, but it's not funny enough to sustain an almost two hour running time. It runs out of steam with about 20-30 minutes still to go. They really could've cut out most of the "break-up" section and gotten away with it. A whole bunch (the extended scenes with their new partners, the phone call) could've been cut out or condensed and the film wouldn't have missed it.
It also runs on the conceit that no relationship can be complete without getting married which feels out of touch with reality, but so are most romantic comedies. They're from San Fran, you'd think this would've dawned on them at one point. Instead they're going about with ideas that felt right at home in 1962.
But the film gets by on the number of laughs and thanks to Blunt and Segel. It could've been much better though.

 Re: The Five-Year Engagement
It was alright. Funny parts, very human as well in parts. But a little disjointed, I guess in showing the five years. I thought the breakup was necessary but also agree with the dragging in places. Pacing is its main problem. B+

 Re: The Five-Year Engagement
Blunt and Segel help keep the movie afloat but it falls victim to recent Apatow productions. The first and last half-hours are great and filled with good comedy, but then the middle hour loses that touch. At least the problem here isn't as bad as Bridesmaids was but there still could have been some fine-tuning done in places. In the end it is a good enough comedy that could have been so much more.

The Five-Year Engagement
What a sweet, hilarious, and life-imitating romantic comedy. I was laughing so hard at some scenes; the subtlety in humour from Jason Segal is lovely; he's an incredibly charming leading man, and Emily Blunt is a clever, sophisticated and sexy female lead. The supporting characters really make this film a winner too, and the outcome, while expected and wholly unoriginal, it's a fitting end.
The script is fantastic too. It's clever and witty, and it just felt fresh to me. I've seen a lot of romantic comedies, and this was something else. It was filmed very well, and it emits a certain unique style to the traditional rom-com - the film doesn't seem like it's set up for belly laughs, but they are definitely in there, I was belly laughing for a lot of the movie. Perhaps it was the mood I was in, but Jesus, I needed that. What a fucking fun two hours I've just had.

A- When I saw it opening weekend with a couple of friends my friend was like, "I've never heard you laugh so much during a movie." And Emily Blunt should be a Bond girl. She'd be perfect.

I mean... this was OK. It had some really funny moments, and a decent storyline... but it felt SO long. And there were some scenes that were completely overlong and unnecessary.
B? B-? I don't know.
