Hercules
This movie is a complete mess. It's full-on tacky Summer blockbuster crap. Eliminating Hercules' legendary status was a bad idea. They attempt at humanising the titular character, and setting it in a "realistic" old-world setting, but then proceed to add in such laughable feats of strength and power. This film was basically a continuation of the Hercules: The Legendary Journey TV series, and in more ways that one. The little quips and the jokey light comedy feel to it, with minimal danger to the main cast, and completely baffling sense of what Hercules actually is, was this films' Achilles heel. Is he a demi-God super-being or a mere mortal that can still move building-sized statues ... this makes no sense whatsoever.
Brett Ratner, while underrated, really fucked this film up. It seems like he had 10 ideas for the film and just put them all in instead of cultivating one idea into a solid adventure film. It's a made-for-kids flick with little imagination and awful acting. The film is completely different to the trailers, which is not such a bad thing in itself, but the direction of the difference is the mistake here. Then the end title credits explains that Hercules did indeed have help when fighting the lion 8-headed water snake etc. (which were all actually humans)....which makes no fucking sense whatsoever. He needed help to defeat a few guys in snake costumes, but he can movie mountain-sized statues unaided??
Oh, and Dwayne Johnson cannot act to save his life. What was good in it? The opening scenes where Ratner attempts to fool you into thinking that he's telling the legendary story of Hercules. After that point, the rest is mostly bad, apart from a few highlights in the battle scenes (although not much). And Dwayne's cringe worthy use of the one PG-13 approved "fuck" in the movie was by far the worst part for me.

 Re: Hercules (2014)
Algren why would you even see Hercules? Our time is too short to watch something you're 99.999999999999999% likely to hate.
I tried to see Hercules yesterday, but my stupid theater was having technical malfunctions. I'll check it out on Monday. Good to know that it's a fun time.

"Today's lesson, how not to stab yourself"
Marketing totally fucked this film. I thought it looked like absolute shit, everything that Algren's review was my prediction. But this was a lot of fun. Ratner's best film since Red Dragon. Only gripe is it should have stayed in the more fun camp way (Herc straight up mowing people down on horseback, ripping off monster's jaws, etc) The 300 type story takes running time away from Herc (The Rock finally plays a leading role well) and his comrades who all have great moments. Ian McShane in particular whose character saw his own death, and keeps expecting it throughout the film.
I think Algren's view is wrong. I think it's obvious that Hercules is Hercules. He has just chosen a different path after his family's slaying. I mean that's the whole point of the scene of Herc vs. the 3 Giant wolves and him finally embracing his name.
Bring on a sequel.

He is actually a bad ass character in it, but the scripts of those flicks are just awful.

The beginning and the end are both great. The battle scenes in the middle are well shot, but it's not too much fun watching Hercules and his crew slaughter the rebels knowing that the Crotus heel turn is inevitable. The same applies to the training sequences, knowing full well that Hercules will have to fight his students later on. I also wish there were more monsters fights, real or fake, but it was mostly entertaining. "Fucking centaurs".

yeah, the marketing for this was way more misleading than Lucy's.
I thought the last half hour or so was fun. the Rock is a good leading man, hope he'll get a really good blockbuster soon.

 Re: Hercules (2014)
Nothing special, but it's ridiculously entertaining. Much better than that Kellan Lutz piece of shit anyways. Probably not the Hercules people wanted, but the Rock is fun too watch and the supporting cast seems to be having fun with their roles.

Way more entertaining than the previews made it out to be. This movie is great just off the one scene where The Rock flips over a damn horse.

 Re: Hercules (2014)
The Rock is THE guy. He owns this movie. The movie was so fun, way better than the trailers made it out to be.
Also, he looks huge tsanding next to "regular" guys, unlike when he's in the WWE, where he just looks big not like this.

 Re: Hercules (2014)
A mediocre film, though it has an amusing and worthy idea at its center: as envisioned here, Hercules is a courageous and strong mercenary, but perhaps not the son of Zeus, and he travels with an enthusiastic propagandist who spins over-the-top tales of supernatural daring to expand Hercules' myth and, by extension, increase his fee. Alas, this tasty morsel of revisionist cynicism is squandered in a rather underdeveloped and wan adventure/war film; as directed with rote competence by Brett Ratner, it goes through the Braveheart- and Gladiator-indebted motions of its genre without any notable spring in its step. Dwayne Johnson clearly has the outsize physical presence to play the title role, and he is not entirely without charisma, though he fails to sell Hercules as the conflicted, haunted, soulful individual the screenplay tells us he is. He just registers as a cordial lug. At least he is aided by a deep and prestigious ensemble of British character actors, including the venerable, tenor-voiced John Hurt as an ambitious monarch and a scene-stealing Ian McShane as an oracular soldier of fortune always grandly, but wrongly predicting his own death.
