Guardians of the Galaxy
Light, fun entertainment. The action is nonstop and comes thick and fast. Very enjoyable summer blockbuster. It has the best looking villain I have ever seen in a superhero film (Ronan) - he is awesomely scary and badass. I think I enjoyed this because of not having any preconceived notions of these characters before. It doesn't get deep or emotional, but it is a wow ride. Oh, and Thanos was awesome and I feel that his and Hulk's fight in a future film will be crazily good.
The score was generic, but the chosen songs were aces. All the performances were good, Lee Pace especially. It seems to be from a different universe to the other trashy Marvel stuff. The jokes all worked. Mini Groot is cute, and Rocket is well CGI-acted with great expressions and attention to detail on his fur/characteristics.
For what it is, it is awesome and in the elite of comic-book films, but it obviously pales in comparison to films outside of this limited and fairly uninteresting genre. What is good is that the tone is exactly how advertised. The Kevin Bacon running joke was cool and the Drax/Peter interplay about metaphors and him being too literal was also great.
B+

Re: Guardians of the Galaxy
I watched it again (this time in China) and enjoyed it very much again. In fact, I think I laughed more at the jokes this time. It's such a fun and hip superhero space adventure. On first viewing, I thought I noticed a mistake, and this viewing confirmed it. When Peter Quill is in the prison and walking behind Gamora he says "I could care less". Even that dumbass mistake has gotten passed scriptwriters now, which is just astonishing. But still a B+

Just watched it on Blu-ray. Very fun and addictive film. The songs are sensational and catchy and the attention to detail on the CGI characters is just awesome. B+

Yeah with a third viewing this surpassed The Avengers as my favorite MCU movie. It would be the best movie of a normal, non-Raid, year.

I just don't get these Marvel movies I guess. I enjoyed this when I saw it in theaters but it is nothing I would say is anywhere near one of the best movies of the year. It's fun, breezy and entertaining but... that's it. The same goes for most other Marvel movies.

Some of the Marvel movies work for me: I loved The Avengers and really enjoyed Captain America 2. But as 'fun' as this one was, it wasn't that memorable or distinctive. On the other hand, I also agree with Gamaur: Gamaur wrote: On reflection this movie is growing a lot on me. The scene where he dances at the end as a distraction... It's actually a classic movie scene. So, despite feeling forgettable at first, its slowly growing on me. Really have to love Chris Pratt here. B

Re: Guardians of the Galaxy
I had mixed feelings about the dance at the end too (wait a minute, we are talking about Pratt's dance and not mini Groot's, right?), but upon further viewing, it fits into the attitude of the film perfectly. Sometimes when these things happen in movies, I can understand the filmmaker thinking they are cool and funny but neglecting to realise that this will be in there FOREVER, and may not always be funny and cool. But this one does work well. It's not just a throwaway gag. It's a distraction for Ronan. Then there's always the other question of 'How does Peter even know the expression "dance off" if he was taken from Earth when he was nine?'. How does he know about Kevin Bacon? How does he know about any of the pop-culture references he makes? Not that it matters too much since it's science- fiction, but yeah.

Re: Guardians of the Galaxy
My final line of thought on this film: amazing chemistry between the leads, ace pop songs, and superb world building, but slightly undermined by the standard-issue FIND-THE-INFINITY-STONE-BEFORE-THE-DARK-ELF-DOES Marvel storytelling.

Twenty-four votes in the A and B ranks and 0 votes in the C-F ranks. That's pretty awesome.

Re: Guardians of the Galaxy
But the fact that a majority of them are B's, that shows you this was not "loved". Merely, it was enjoyed. It was in the same vein as The Avengers. It didn't bring much of anything new, but it did what it did in a fun way.

Re: Guardians of the Galaxy
I disagree. Fourteen are B's, ten are A's. Any in the A category, for me, are "loved". Then the B's are split between B+ (which are loved) and B and B- which are just "enjoyed". So it would require someone to go and check all the individual posts to see the grades. I'll leave the admin to you.
