 Before Sunrise
Before Sunrise Quote: Before Sunrise is a 1995 romantic drama film directed by Richard Linklater and written by Linklater and Kim Krizan. The film follows Jesse (Ethan Hawke), a young American, and Céline (Julie Delpy), a young French woman, who meet on a train and disembark in Vienna, where they spend the night walking around the city and getting to know each other.
The plot is minimalist, since aside from walking and talking, not much happens. The two characters' ideas and perspectives on life and love are detailed. Jesse is a romantic disguised as a cynic, and Céline is seemingly a romantic, albeit with some doubts. Taking place over the course of one night, their limited time together is always on their minds, and leads to their revealing more about themselves than they normally would, since both believe they will never see one another again.
Jesse and Céline make an appearance in Linklater's 2001 film Waking Life. A 2004 sequel, Before Sunset, picks up the story nine years after the events of the first film.

I thought this was just great. I loved the two leads, and it had an absolutely amazing script.
9/10 (A-)

I loved this movie a lot. Who knew a movie that centers only 2 characters could be so facinating.

Amazing film. Who knew that dialogue could be so engrossing? Hawke and Delpy really became their characters and delivered two of the most amazing performances. Nearly perfect. A

I recently watched this again and it holds up extremely well. It's not quite as good as the 2nd one, but it's pretty close. I was in awe at how completely engrossed I was in these characters. It's a movie that has such as simplistic concept, yet it's not at all.

Wonderful!
I hadn't seen the first one (yet!) before seeing this one, but this sequel to Before Sunrise was simply wonderful. A real time conversation between and about lost loves. Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy were perfect - the director, Richard Linklater, after this and Waking Life --- I'm in awe... (can't wait to see what he's up to next year with A Scanner Darkly... (Oh, oh - he dropped the ball on that one!))
Before Sunset is a must see! A RomCom for the thinking lover...
7 out of 5.

I watched this film after watching Before Sunset, and I was amazed by how close it was in quality to that one. It's such an engrossing film, Delpy and Hawke immediately click so well and play them so perfectly its easy to see how they were able to carry their characters into the sequel nine whole years later. Sunset is probably a little better, but if you like your Young Romantics in European City without the emotional rockiness, this is the way to go. Love love it.

****/**** I agree completely. For some reason I had understood Sunrise to be a much lesser film than Sunset, but I just watched it again the other day and thats completely not true. Damn near as good as its sequel, and depending on the day, might be better.

 Re: Before Sunrise
I'd give it a 9/10 (A-), but haven't seen it in forever and think it could go up once I do. Terrific film though. Am unbelievably excited for the third.

 Re: Before Sunrise
I just rewatched this and the sequel in anticipation of Before Midnight. What these two films have in common is incredibly good writing and two great performances from the leads. In both films you have two people walking around talking, and your interest never goes away. How is that possible?
Both films get an A from me. I hope Before Midnight goes wide enough to play around me because I don't want to wait to see it at home.

 Re: Before Sunrise
What a lovely movie! It's a simple film, but its beauty lies in its simplicity. Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy make for a phenomenal screen couple, as they play their characters so naturally that it hardly feels like we're watching two people acting, and they have such strong chemistry with one another that I bought their budding romance every step of the way. Being about the age that the characters are in this film, I was also reminded of my brushes with romance in college. The fact that the film can speak so strongly to universal emotions despite its very specific scenario is a testament to just how masterful it is.

 Re: Before Sunrise
I really like what Linklater was doing here, condensing a relationship down to a single day, but I actually found the characters to be kind of annoying (especially Ethan) when they were talking. The making out parts were very romantic.
