Poignant and funny, 50/50 takes a refreshingly human perspective on the "disease movie." Joseph Gordon-Levitt is just terrific, and Seth Rogen (though quite good) takes a backseat to his character throughout. Anna Kendrick is just as delightful here as she was in Up in the Air, while Anjelica Huston is affecting as Gordon-Levitt's mother. Screenwriter Will Reiser based this film on his own experiences, and it's easy to see it. The movie feels authentic, and treads the balance between comedy and drama well throughout. B+

I'm seeing a movie with my mom today, and while I'd really like to see this I'm not sure she'd like it. Is it pretty raunchy? Though even if it were she did love Bridesmaids, but this seems more like a "guy movie" and something for younger people.

It's not very raunchy, other than maybe a few of Rogen's lines. There's nothing grotesque here (whereas Bridesmaids had the big shit/dress shop scene).

Very funny and moving. The final few scenes in the hospital were heartbreaking. Joseph Gordon-Levitt was incredible and I loved Anna Kendrick as well. A-

Way too much cancer, not nearly enough comedy.

It's just lucky the cast was cute, because otherwise this is just an over-baked after school special. At least Love and Other Drugs had nudity.

1 out of 5.

I liked it, although it was a pretty simplified and entirely unremarkable broad view of a guy with cancer, lacking a central theme or focus. I'm still a sucker for my dear Anna, and JGL is just so good, I laughed and got a little sad, yeah I had fun with it I spose.

Exactly. If they don't know how to behave, and feel OK offending others, they get their ass kicked, so they'll think next time before opening their rotten mouths.

Thus far it's the best movie of the year for me and will only grow on me the more I see it. JGL is absolutely flawless, when is this guy going to get his Oscar? Anna Kendrick was adorable here, and Seth Rogan was really good too, as was Bryce Dallas Howard (she needs to stop playing bitchy roles or I'm going to have to stop liking her :P). Very funny movie and it made me bawl my eyes out on more than one occasion. (a friend of mine is actually dying of cancer right now, so it rang very close to home).

9/10

I agree. I cried.

This is one of the year's best films. I adored it. It's funny and really touching. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Anna Kendrick, and Seth Rogen are all great. Levitt is Oscar-worthy, IMO.

So wonderful. I had heard it was great and while I thought it looked good I still didn't expect I'd love it so much. Cannot recommend it enough. Would like to see it again.

Saw this again today, this time with my mom. She really liked it. I really hope Joseph Gordon-Levitt gets nominated for Best Actor (Musical or Comedy) at the Golden Globes, and I also hope it can be nominated for Best Film (Musical or Comedy).

I wish they tried a little harder not to make Bryce Dallas Howard's character come off as a complete cunt.

Still, though, very funny and heartfelt.

Finally watched this and honestly it's one of the best films I've seen in the past few years. At least Top 5 for 2011 for me if not higher. It just pulled me in right aweay and got better and better moving forward. Probably Seth Rogen's best role to date. JGL is of course fantastic. Anna Kendrick continues to prove that she is one of the best actresses out there right now, if yet still underrated, and she's just too darn cute also.

This also felt like the perfect mix of comedy and drama with the subject matter. It all just felt natural.

This has honestly become one of my favorite movies. I have seen it a bunch of times on Blu-ray as well as it constantly being on Cinemax and TMC and it is just a fantastic movie. Glad you loved it!

Light and intense drama, unsure of its message, provides interesting and stimulating viewing. The comedy here is well done and the drama is equally well done. The film is cliché and doesn't add anything that we didn't already know (we get it, cancer sucks), but it has a powerful indie feel to it, and it's pleasing to see Rogen in a respectful role (somewhat). Gordon-Levitt was good, I suppose, and Bryce Dallas Howard was kind of fantastic as the bitch. I thought that Anjelica Houston was actually very good too. All in all, it was a good film. I laughed a few times and I was totally interested in the film -- but he shouldn't have lived. It would have made the film better and pushed the message of cancer sufferers more shockingly down people's throats, in that friends and family of these people would cherish the time with them. Not that this film has any influential power, but it portrays people as surviving cancer, which kind of dilutes the seriousness of it, which surely wasn't the films aim.

It's based on an actual person that did survive, so it would be stupid to change it.

I liked it, but outside of the strong performance by levit, I found it mostly forgettable, and filled with a lot of cliches. But it hits most of its marks, and I enjoyed watching it. I actually found a film like bucket list able to switch from genres much better.
