Re: Deliver Us From Evil (2014)
This was so, so, so awful. It is literally probably the slowest two hours I've ever sat through in a movie theater. It was unbearable. The direction is horrible (holy fucking shaky cam) and the dialogue was just horrible. I felt so bad for the actors. The exorcism scene was a total joke (yes, have a random Tolkien black guy watch from double sided glass and interrupt saying "oh wow, that's fucked up!" two times). Just so, so, so bad. I would compare it to The Apparition, honestly. There is absolutely zero tension and is all about the lame, awful jump scares.
Also, there were flat out boos when the movie ended. I've also never seen so many people leaving and coming back as I did. I have no idea who this movie is for. Like I said, it is made like a crappy PG-13 ghost movie but it will be rated R and will just not find an audience unless they REALLY promote it well and get tons of people in the theater opening weekend.

You mean there isn't a random black dude in the film, dressed up as J. R. R. Tolkien?

Unfortunately, no. It may have mad the movie a tad more bearable if there was. I just can't get over how terrible it was.

I didn't hate Sinister but I found it overrated. B-/C+ I can't even recall what I gave it. This is on a whole different level lol

Well, in that case your horror taste is not reliable. Sinister was very creepy and atmosphreic.

Re: Deliver Us From Evil (2014)
Because I didn't love one more my horror taste isn't reliable? Alright. Well, we shall just wait for more reviews to actually come out and for all of you to see this wonderful gem of a film. I didn't give awful reviews to either Emily Rose or Sinister. I RARELY give out an F rating (the last one I think was actually The Apparition, which this reminded me a lot of with the constant jump scares, plot that went nowhere, etc.) but when I do it is usually a consensus with just about everyone hating something. . Who knows? Maybe I missed the ball and this was really a good movie. Though that doesn't explain the boos the film received or the people I know personally that saw it that hated it.

Re: Deliver Us From Evil (2014)
Deliver me from the frustration caused by Deliver Us from Evil. This bid by Sinister director Scott Derrickson to blend police procedure and the supernatural is defined by its uneven nature. It ranges from frightening and inspired to dull and rote, and it is disheartening to see the film's most riveting moments squandered by its crudest. Eric Bana delivers a capable, ultra-macho performance as as a hard-edged Bronx policeman investigating a local crime spree as brutal as it is strange. A potential explanation is provided by an unconventional Jesuit priest specializing in demonic possession. As played by gifted Carlos star Édgar Ramírez, this character is a magnetic variation on cinematic priesthood with his long hair, leather, and heroin-abusing history. As far as mainstream horror protagonists go, they are more dynamic than usual.
For a while, the film is dynamic, too. Early scenes indicating a pure evil spreading through the greased, rain-swept, Se7en-indebted vision of the NYC borough are full of creepy imagery and possess, no pun intended, a convincing atmosphere of decay and dread. This portion of the film builds to a memorable series of bumps in the night at the closed-for-the-evening Bronx Zoo. Later, however, scenes begin to crash into each other, disrupting the flow of the storyline and reducing the tension. Previously tantalizing details (including repeated references to the music of the Doors) fail to coalesce or are misplaced entirely as over-the-top, low-brow jolts mount instead. Valuable screen time is devoted to a so-banal-it-hurts domestic subplot with Olivia Munn blandly portraying a wife who complains because her husband broods and guards his secrets. And the finale is a flatly staged, by-the-numbers exorcism sequence which did not raise my pulse.
C
And a few random observations:
- The Bana character having a "radar" for evil is a groaner. It would be cooler if he were just this tough-as-nails asshole cop, not a borderline Chosen One.
- There are a great deal of neat sound-design flourishes and music cues, a la Sinister.

Deliver Us From Evil
Eric Bana is captivating as usual, and the story of following an officer around while he uncovers the mystery behind an evil and Devilish plot to turn people over to the dark side in rain-filled New York is a great one, but this film becomes too light on effective scares, relies on jump scares, and doesn't create a serious level of dread. At no point did I feel that Bana and his family were in danger, and the demon/evil in the film isn't scary enough. The ending (yes, that exorcism) is ridiculous, but I am glad I have seen it. It just didn't live up to its potential. In fact, it should have just been a film about Bana tracking down child molesters and beating them to death.

The best thing about this movie was Eric Bana, who I usually don't like very much but I thought he nailed it here. Overall, I don't care about exorcism movies and this one wasn't able to change that.

One of the worst movies of the year. This is such a silly mess but worst of all it's not remotely entertaining. This was boring as hell. Nearly impossible to get invested in.

I love Bana. I love him when he's playing a Trojan and you can hear his Aussie accent. I love him when he's playing a New Yorker and you can hear his Aussie accent. I love him when he's playing a Pommie and you can hear his Aussie accent.
