 Airplane!
Airplane! Quote: Airplane! (titled Flying High! in Australia, New Zealand and Japan) is a 1980 American satirical comedy film directed and written by David Zucker, Jim Abrahams, and Jerry Zucker and released by Paramount Pictures. It stars Robert Hays and Julie Hagerty and features Leslie Nielsen, Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Lorna Patterson. The film is a spoof of the disaster film genre, and a close parody of the 1957 Paramount film Zero Hour!. The film is well-noted for its use of absurdist and surrealist comedy.
Airplane! was a huge financial success, grossing over US$83 million in North America alone, against a budget of just $3.5 million. The film's creators received the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Adapted Comedy, and nominations for the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and a BAFTA Award for Best Screenplay.
In the years since its release, Airplane!'s reputation has grown substantially beyond its modest comic intentions. The film was voted the 10th-funniest American comedy on AFI's 100 Years... 100 Laughs list in 2000, and ranked 6th on Bravo's 100 Funniest Movies. In a major 2007 survey by Channel 4 in the United Kingdom, it was judged the second greatest comedy film of all time.
In 2008, Airplane! was selected by Empire magazine as one of The 500 Greatest Movies of All Time and in 2010, it was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.

Best Comedy ever in my opinion. It never gets old and the joke level is amazing.
Zucker used up all his good jokes on this baby.

Ill vote for this as the funniest film ever made. 26 years old and the jokes are still as fresh as ever. I can't imagine seeing this in theaters in 1980, because if I die when I watch this movie now, and comedy looses its luster over years, it must have been rediculous watching this
A+

Q: Surely you can't call this one of the funniest movies?
My answer: I do, and don't call me Shirley.

 Re: Airplane
Yep, it's definitely one of the five funniest movies ever made. If not number one.

 Re: Airplane
Watched this recently for admittedly the first time since I was about 8
Actually thought it's a bit overrated. Good comedy but not a legendary one. Mostly a series of gags, it has its moments like the automatic pilot, Kareem, the smiling during the blonde's folk song, the flamboyant guy in the on-ground base... but just as many jokes that fall flat from being too obvious, go too long and kill the joke, or just repeat themselves. For eg. punching the religious flower giver felt brilliant the first time, by the 10th time it was just dull. Same thing with repeating the word pun joke about 55 times. The dancefloor flashback starts promising but overstays its welcome... overall there's definitely way, way too much time spent in the flashbacks which don't work at all because the two leads are really boring/weak compared to the supporting players on the plane
The flaws in this film were emphasized when I watched Young Frankenstein the night after. The difference between the two couldn't be more clear. Airplane is a series of skits and gags... Some hit, some miss, overall it's a relatively funny and amusing movie but sort of comes off disposably like a fast food meal. Young Frankenstein on the other hand is a legitimately complete film and masterpiece that transcends just being one of the funniest films ever. And it is much funnier than Airplane, partly because Brooks and Wilder recognize how to bring hilarity out of characters playing it straight, the meaning of timing, and because in general the jokes and set-ups are a lot more creative and ingenius than in Airplane. There's also no comparison of the two when it comes to the cast - Young Frankenstein has one of the best casts of ANY film I've seen comedy or not, while Airplane's is barely above mediocore. The difference in production and filmic sense between the two is also obviously incomparable. Young Frankenstein is the work of comedy masters and deserves to be placed in the pantheon of all films... everything is perfectly orchastrated and placed throughout the film. Airplane is more Zucker and co. stuffing as many simple gags and goofy moments as they could and seeing how many of them stick. The former is much more a work of skill and filmic ability
Again I still think it's a good film. But I'm not buying the "one of the best comedies ever" hype. Top Secret is Zucker's best film pretty easily
3/5

 Re: Airplane
I just watched this for the third or fourth time last night. I own both this and its sequel on DVD. I think it's a pretty hilarious movie, but not AMAZING.

 Re: Airplane
Airplane is a film that needs to be watched at least 5 times. Although hysterical the first time, those jokes continue to build and jokes you never saw last time were as good. Some people may be jaded as many jokes have been reused over the years, even by the Zucker brothers, but no spoof has ever gotten it more right then this film. Brooks is more in the style of making a complete film that lampoons a genre or certain type of film, both are brilliant in there differences but are two completely different types of filmmaking.

 Re: Airplane!
Overrated.
It's random fluff. Funny in passing but not for an entire movie. If a movie like this were made today it would be reviled.
As Shack said, timing is everything, and this movie doesn't seem to get it. Too many jokes play on for far too long.
Also, as it's a movie, it needs to have some semblance of a story. This could be a YouTube video with random shit happening everywhere for no reason and no need for continuity. It's not too far away from the dreaded Movie spoofs.
