Perhaps what's most remarkable to me about Gravity is that, despite the astonishing visuals on display, the biggest impression it left on me was showing the triumph of the human spirit. So good.

Comedy gold.

The next time Libs does Tough Mudder, she will draw on Sandy's strength.

Alright, you don't need to be a jerk (on my birthday no less).

We get it, you didn't care for the movie and have no qualms about making that known.

And as mentioned earlier in this thread, the scene where Clooney "returns" was so well done that even though you know it's not real, by the end of it, you're still shocked it wasn't.

Honestly, if this scene would have been real, I would have hated the movie. As soon as he appeared I turned to my friend and said, "This better not be real. That would be ridiculous." And that's all I kept thinking throughout the scene. Thankfully it wasn't. Then when I saw it again last night my mom and my niece never once doubted that it was happening and they were shocked and disappointed when it wasn't real. :P

I do think it's fairly unrealistic that she survived. If it ended before she reached earth I would have thought it would be obvious that she wasn't going to make it. Audiences would not have been happy if she didn't survive though. Of course her reaching earth wasn't enough for my mom. She said it ended funny because she wanted to see her rescued.

Nooo, adding more people to the film would've tarnished the rest of the movie.

If you stay through the credits, there is a brief scene in which Ed Harris gets a cup of coffee and says, "What a day!"

Post Re: Gravity
Not as great as the hype lead me to believe, but it is still pretty great. Reminded me more of Argo than Life of Pi actually, which I've seen a lot of comparisons too. Argo was a great thriller that was misappropriately labeled by early reviewers as one of the most important films of our generation, which is why I think it eventually gained its backlash. Gravity's camera work is stunning, but the story and characters are pretty standard. I would have liked to have spent more time with Sandra floating through space rather than in ships that were about to be destroyed.

The camera work is magnificent though, and that's why Gravity works. The debris scenes are incredibly intense, but with standard cinematography would not be memorable. The pacing is also great, as even the short 90 minute runtime seems longer than what we saw. I've seen many 40 minute television shows that dragged out longer in my mind.

So I'm gonna go with an A-/B+ for it's amazing camera work and the tension Alfonso Cuaron is able to build. I just wish I had more of a connection with the characters.

Meh, In sometimes get a feeling that people want this to be another 2001. Why? There is already one 2001 and a great one too.

Anyway, I have seen it for the second time today and liked it more. First time it was A-, now a solid A and my Top 5 of the year.

I did like the angle they played here, and the
Spoiler: show
scene where Ryan is telling Kowalski things to tell her daughter was very sad. That was the moment Bullock really sold me, as the script is pretty rushed.

Can't get behind giving her or Cauron - or the film - any major awards because everything just feels a tad too quick/forced. TBH I think the movie would have greatly benefited from some more character moments prior to the collision. Another 30 minutes of build up would have reduced the "well that was quite convenient for the short films strong character arc" sense of underdevelopment I felt during it.

It does frustrate me a bit when films which clearly could have been an instant classic settle for merely being very good. GRAVITY falls into the latter category, IMO.

GRAVITY

I had been waiting for this film ever since they released one of the trailers that had the thrilling soundtrack backing it during an intense sequence. That sold me and the film delivered the ride to me. I loved the movie. I thought Bullock was superb and Clooney filled his role perfectly as well. The visuals are magnificent and the tone that is created from the beginning to the various location hopping that takes place were practically perfect. The only thing that was a bit distracting was the woof sequence but after a second viewing I didn't mind it. The film in total is just gives you your moneys worth and I think it's rare for a film like this to deliver that. Great job to the directors, the visual effects teams and the person who did the soundtrack. The soundtrack just gels with the film as well. I saw it first in IMAX 3D and to be honest there was 3D elements in the film it just wasn't completely immersive. The second 2D viewing was more than sufficient, but it should be seen on IMAX anyway.

Grade - A

Although Gravity sometimes felt like too much of a muchness, ya can't argue with the physics of this baby! The whole weightless/inertia/action/reaction 'thang was exquisite! While it doesn't outdo 2001 or Apollo 13, it certainly expands on the breadth of the visualization of their space movie fx vocabulary.

This almost implausiblepossible tale of survival hurtles through many moods from tragedy to humor en route to it's final impact securely tethered to the perfect performance of Sandra Bullock as Dr. Ryan Stone.

Unfortunately, the film just never fully captured me in it's gravitational field.

4 out of 5.

Spoiler: show
Was the final line after the long final credits really: "3, 2, 1, Shark!"?

Post Re: Gravity
I agree with most of what you said. The dialogue is godawful a lot of the time. Clooney's character is almost...too Clooney. As if his every line is straining to convey what a charming, self-effacing ol' rapscallion he is.

Beyond the visual spectacle, I, too, never became incredibly invested in the experience. And this is the crux of a survival drama. The viewer should be on the edge of his or her seat, anxious at every turn, hoping and praying for the character or characters. For me, Gravity is largely, "Oh, wow, this is a gorgeous rendering of space. And I don't believe any of this or much care if she lives or dies." Children of Men is a hundred times superior on levels such as character development, storytelling, thematic depth, etc. And, God help me, I may even prefer it as a technical achievement: is it just me or is the third-act urban-warfare chase in Children of Men a more ambitious and complicated sequence to plan, shoot, and edit than graceful shots of people suspended in front of a green screen?

I hope this does not represent Alfonso Cuarón becoming an Avatar era James Cameron type, more interested in general in high-tech wizardry than interesting human beings and worthy stories.

And for me the most groan worthy close-call moment is when she, if I remember correctly, is trying to get from the escape pod to the Chinese station and starts blowing a fire extinguisher to navigate her way through space. This moment more than any other just pushed me to this place of, "No. Too far. This bitch would be dead. She is not going to use a damn fire extinguisher to perfectly propel herself in the exact right directions while floating in outer space."

She sure is Jason Bourne level competent as an astronaut for a person who is always screaming and only trained for a few months.
