Re: Frances Ha
It's very enjoyable and for the most part pretty lighthearted - it feels like a cousin to "Girls" and reminded me a lot of the series at many points. Greta Gerwig is fantastic - though it is easy to become a bit frustrated by her character it's also hard not to root for her. The rest of the cast is made up of mostly unknowns who were solid. I thought it had some pacing issues, but for the most part it's a success that should have good word of mouth among arthouse auds. B+

Re: Frances Ha
If this is anything like Girls, it will probably be my favorite movie ever.

Re: Frances Ha
It's a lot like a character plotline over a season of Girls condensed into one film. But it works because the script is light and funny (without shying away from the reality of Frances' situation) and Greta Gerwig is incredibly charming.
The dinner party and Paris will be two of my favorite scenes of the year.

Re: Frances Ha
A fellow critic at my screening described it as being made by people who wanted it to play like a Nouvelle Vague film, but watched "Melrose Place" and "90210" for inspiration. Sums it up pretty well.

Re: Frances Ha
It is wonderful. Amusing, gentle, honest, touching. How great is the way the Paris sequence unfolds? Or the way the significance of the title is revealed? Perhaps one could charge it with being slight, but...blow me.
Noah Baumbach is very clearly in love with Greta Gerwig and has given her a fantastic comic and dramatic platform on which to shine, and she does.

Re: Frances Ha
Frances definitely reminded me of Hannah from Girls, but it surprised me how she remains likable throughout the whole thing. I enjoyed this very much.

Re: Frances Ha
I really enjoyed this. I thought Greta Gerwig was great. Will buy it when it's out next week (Barnes & Noble will have it for only $19.99 as part of their Criterion sale).
8/10 (B+) for now, but wouldn't be shocked if it went up to an A- in the future.

Re: Frances Ha
Just caught this on Netflix Instant. Greta Gerwig kills it. Her character felt 100% real, and I loved almost every single conversation she had. The ending feels a bit short because you like the character so much you want her to have a cheesy cliche everything-is-perfect-and-will-be-always montage, but the movie is respectably much more realistic than that, which in the end, makes it better.

Re: Frances Ha
I agree about the ending. Part of me really wanted to see her get together with Benji, but technically it's better this way. I liked that her "person" was her best friend rather than a guy. And it's alluded to that her and Benji will get together at some point anyway.

Re: Frances Ha
Gerwig does some decent acting here but man did I fuckin hate her character. Unnecessary blabbering constantly throughout by Frances didn't make her likeable, it just made her annoying and the film felt long because of it. Also, this film should of just been set at the guys' apartment the whole time because those scenes are by far the best in the film.

Re: Frances Ha
I wanted to scream at Frances while also comforting her the entire movie. Great character in a strange world that would seem fictional had I not temporarily lived through it myself.
Second best Gerwig after Ladybird. Second best Baumbach after Marriage Story. A-
