 Near Dark
Near Dark Quote: Near Dark is an American vampire/Western horror film, written by Eric Red and Kathryn Bigelow, and directed by Bigelow. The story follows a young man in a small midwestern town who becomes involved with a family of nomadic American vampires. Starring then little-known actors Adrian Pasdar and Jenny Wright, the movie was released in 1987, part of a revival of serious vampire movies in the late 1980s.
The film did poorly at the box office upon release, but was viewed favourably by critics subsequently and has a sizable cult following.

Interesting Vampire film. The family of vampires are really awesome and the main hook of this movie, Lance Henrickson and Bill Paxton are very entertaining. The male and female lead on the otherhand are not. I'd give it a recommendation, its not really scary or action packed, but it was fun at times. There remaking it next year, and that might not be a bad thing, they should have focused more on the family of vampires.

How interesting: Kathryn Bigelow was married to James Cameron at the time this film was made and she has three superb cast members from Aliens that make this film a treat to watch.
Lance Henriksen ( Bishop from Aliens ) tells Caleb " I may have taught him everything he knows, but I certainly never taught him everything I know. " Now that is a cool line. The strength in this film is the atmosphere. It is not really a scary movie but the feel of it makes you want to keep watching. You want to know what cool line Bill ( Hudson from Aliens ) was going to come out with. Jeannette ( Vasquez from Aliens ) Goldstein essentially plays the same role in this film as she did in Aliens but she does it so well. I think if this film was directed by a bigger named director it would have done better business at the box office. It really is a good movie with a funny script. Bigelow just wasn't a big name director but now that this film is on video it should be treasured. At least to see what Paxton does with his character. And to see how he dies, after all, he does in almost every film before Titanic.
9/10

A great, classic horror movie. One of the best vampire movies of all-time.

This was one of my favourite movies growing up. Still love it to this day. It's a shame Jenny Wright dropped off the face of the Earth.

Near Dark
Turns out I had seen it before. It's not often that I have never seen or heard of a film, so when David recommended Near Dark to me and I was unable to recall anything about it, I just had to download it and watch it. But the last scene where they are in the station wagon burning up, I've watched that scene a few times before. Perhaps I've never watched the whole film, but I'd seen parts. It's usually one of those late night movies where I want to watch the movie afterwards so I end up seeing the last 10 minutes of this but never all of it.
I just watched it in full and it's generally a good film. The 80s score is adorable, and the cast of The Terminator (Henriksen and Paxton) and Terminator 2: Judgement Day ("You forgot to say please" guy and John Connor's stepmum) is great too. I didn't like the Bill Paxton death scene and the events leading up to it, it was too influenced by The Terminator, so much so that it's a blatant copy but with vampires instead of cyborgs. I liked how they didn't utter the word "vampire" once in the movie, that was obviously a creative decision and I liked it. The pacing of the movie is just all off, though, and it bugged me. But Paxton has some great lines which made it a pleasure.

Glad you enjoyed it.
The scene in the isolated biker bar is one of my favorite scenes in any movie ever.

The scene in the isolated biker bar is one of my favorite scenes in any movie ever. It's certainly odd and in no way generic. It has an eerie silence and the humans act abnormally subdued. Lance Henriksen has a powerful presence in the movie and in that scene. Paxton is left to get away with murder (literally). But, ultimately, Caleb is a fucking moron and pussies out of doing what needs to be done.
