 John Carter
John Carter Quote: John Carter is a 2012 American science fiction action film that tells the adventures of John Carter, the heroic protagonist of Edgar Rice Burroughs' 11-volume Barsoom series. The film marks the centennial of the character's first appearance.
Former Confederate captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch) is mysteriously transported to Mars ("Barsoom") where he becomes part of a conflict between the various nations of the planet, whose leaders include Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). Carter takes it upon himself to save Barsoom and its people from a growing threat.
The film is the live-action debut of director/writer Andrew Stanton; his previous work includes the Pixar animated films Finding Nemo and WALL-E. Co-written by Mark Andrews and Michael Chabon, it is produced by Jim Morris, Colin Wilson, and Lindsey Collins, and scored by Michael Giacchino.
Walt Disney Pictures is distributing the film and released it in the United States on March 9, 2012; the film is shown in regular 2D and in the Digital 3D and IMAX 3D formats. Filming began in November 2009 with principal photography underway in January 2010, wrapping seven months later in July 2010.

 Re: John Carter
Didn't think it was awful but it wasn't very good either.
I was surprisingly not bored during it but the story (and the characters) was so lackluster for me.

 Re: John Carter
When I post my review and grade it will look like those Bradley rants about how wrongly hated and misunderstood some "masterpieces" of modern filmmaking are. But I don't care. This was a great movie.

 Re: John Carter
It's entertaining. It's a shame that we won't get to see a sequel.

 Re: John Carter
A very boring movie. I could go on about what was wrong but it's easier to name the few things that worked: the art direction, the music and Lynn Collins.

 Re: John Carter
I had to admit this film has seemed a bit better in hindsight than it did while watching it. It will probably play much better on dvd/bluray. It has all kinds of flaws (like for starters, the guy who played Burroughs was ungodly awful) but the dreamy romanticism aspect and creation of another world was pretty good. I think I'd see a sequel if they made one, which they won't of course.

 Re: John Carter
A charming mess. The special effects are absolutely fantastic, but what really makes this a fun ride is the self-aware humor. Unfortunately, by the end the film seemed determined to destroy it's own internal logic but perhaps that's inevitable when you have a $250 million epic that's obviously undergone lots of studio meddling.
B-
PS: Going from the lavish extravagance of this to the pared down minimalism of Silent House made for a fun double feature.

 Re: John Carter
Well wadda ya know?
I dug John Carter and I dug Princess Dejah - - dammit! - - I dug this whole retro, melodramatic, b-movie, hard sci-fi, space opera, epic.
John Carter is old school done right.
100 out of 5.
{What a waste! If John Carter had been shown to audiences in the 50's, 60's, 70's, even the 80's, it woulda blown their socks off with it's Ben Hur-esque storyline, it's supreme 19th century fantasy setting, it's fur clad Barsooms, and it's straight arrow sensibility. Unfortunately the current crop of teentwentythirtysomethingnominds didn't bother to develop an attention span, nor a sense of romance for that matter. Movies have become a series of tableaus, vignettes, charicatures of reality - - there's really no time for realtime reality, I mean really. That wouldn't be so bad, unappreciative bastards won't know any better, except they're going to put the kibosh on the sequels for the rest of us. }

 Re: John Carter
lol this happens with many notorious flops.
If they flop bad and they are not terrible films, you have super low expectations and find the film to be okay.
Its a interesting story and premise but could have done a 100 times better.
Still good time pass for a Long weekend at home

 Re: John Carter
I feel everything outside of the alien race was good but too much time is spent with the green guys that the film looses its balance. Actually, this film doesn't have much balance as it goes back and forth a bit too much. Decent performances and a couple of humorous moments save the film a bit. **

 Re: John Carter
A fun ride, but flawed in several ways. I loved every special effect in this movie. In that respect it's awesome (and it should be considering the budget). The casting/acting was all around decent.
Maybe I missed it, but was there a motive for the Therns doing what they do?

 Re: John Carter
Much better than I expected. Some of the characters (there were a lot) got confused ... (Hey, why is the bad guy helping him escape? Oh, that was someone else. Where did he come from?)
I saw it on Blu Ray and not in 3D at the theatre so that may skew my perceptions.

Algren wrote: Bradley goes against the grain?? This is unheard of. I think you're misreading this thread - - almost everyone here liked it. Maybe they didn't all love John Carter as much as I did, but the only person who hated it was trixster. Sure it was a BO flop, but the movie itself is a surprisingly good old school action adventure - - you should consider checking it out on bluray, Algren.

 Re: John Carter
I didn't read any other posts apart from your "100 out of 5" post. I think it's safe to assume that your opinion is going against the grain of society when you award 100 points out of 5 to a generally disliked film.
I'll check it out as soon as it becomes available to me either online or DVD. I don't do Blu-Ray.

 Re: John Carter
I don't believe society hates this film. It has a 4.3/5 rating on Amazon based on over 1,000 customer reviews. My sense of the situation: audiences, particularly families, enjoy this a great deal because they exist outside the industry sphere which destroyed and defamed John Carter leading up to its release, Heaven's Gate style.

 Re: John Carter
Perhaps society doesn't "hate" John Carter, and perhaps I've been drawn into that way of thinking because of the negative reviews and disappointment at its box office. But "100 out of 5" is certainly going against the "4.3 out of 5" grain.

 Re: John Carter
Bradley has given films a grade of infinity squared before, I believe. 100 out of 5 is conservative.

It's got to be one of his highest. I've seen many 20-something's out of 5, but a hundred is crazy. I do like to read his posts, especially his reviews, because they're just so much damn fun.
