Battle Royale

Quote:
Battle Royale (バトル・ロワイアル Batoru Rowaiaru) is a 2000 Japanese film directed by Kinji Fukasaku based on the novel of the same name. It was written by Kenta Fukasaku, and stars Takeshi Kitano and Tatsuya Fujiwara. The film aroused much controversy.

A sequel, Battle Royale II: Requiem, followed. The music soundtracks for both movies were composed, arranged and conducted by Masamichi Amano, performed by the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra and features pieces of classical music with some original composition. The choral Western classical music used as the film's overture theme music is the "Dies Irae" from Giuseppe Verdi’s Requiem.

Royale. :P

I love this movie, one of my favorite foreign films.

If you haven't heard of Battle Royale here's a little summary from imdb.

"At the dawn of the new millennium, Japan is in a state of near-collapse. Unemployment is at an all-time high, and violence amongst the nations youth is spiralling out of control. With school children boycotting their lessons and physically abusing their teachers, a beleaguered and near-defeated government decides to introduce a radical new measure: the Battle Royale Act Overseen by their former teacher, Kitano ('Beat' Takeshi) and requiring that a randomly chosen school class be taken to a deserted island and forced to fight each other to the death, the Act dictates that only one pupil be allowed to survive the punishment. He or she will return, not as the victor, but as the ultimate proof of the lengths to which the government are prepared to go to curb the tide of juvenile disobedience."

There is a rumor that this film will be released in theatres here in the States this year, I really hope it's true. While the film is sort of a cult movie already, many more people should get a chance to see it.

You definitely should! It is not a classic, but a very well-made and somewhat shocking movie with good characters.

B+

I gave both a B+, so they are pretty much on par. I need to see Battle Royale again to tell which one is better.

I loved it. I still find it somewhat shocking, even after 3 viewings, but I'm glad I bought it. There is one scene I absolutely hated, but it doesn't take that much away from the rest of the film. A- from me.

The lighthouse kitchen scene is awesome.

I bought part 2 a while ago, but I've been too busy to see it.

This is by far one of the best foreign films I have ever seen. The pacing is excellent, it never drags. Every scene is handled brilliantly. I liked the fact that we get flashback scenes behind most of the characters, so we can see the origin of where they came from, and so we can develop an attachment for certain characters. I thought the development of the characters was awesome. One of the main villians Kiriyama doesn't utter a single word throughout the entire film. He was a very ruthless guy, that had absolutely no remorse for what he was doing, and his character was definitely scary. The whole plot of this movie is very creative, and makes you think about the whole idea of the movie. I was putting myself in these kids shoes, and it wasn't a good feeling, but this movie really enthralls you. It pulls you in, and makes you care for most of the characters involved. It's definitely a disturbing piece of work, but still extraordinary. I loved every minute of it, and the way all the characters act, and all of their actions were very realistic, and all of the actors did a superb job. I also really liked the ending. This is truly a masterpiece in my opinion, and I feel urged to rent the sequel, but I heard it was awful. I don't want to rent it and be disappointed, especially after seeing such a fantastic movie like this. The score is also very good, and the use of opera music fitted the movie very well. A lot of the death scenes were fantastic, and the gore level is really high here, but I really enjoyed it. The special effects are also very impressive. This film was just so amazing! People should really give it a chance. I'm very glad I did.

A+

Brilliantly Bloody and dosed with quirky Japanese touches, I wouldn't say this movie makes you think in any real way but it always leaves a big grin on my face whenever i see it. And I love that automatic pistol which seems to never run out of ammunition which just underscores this films silliness.

Bloodily awesome, but I thought I was expecting something more groundbreaking, or more impressive technicals, or a more brilliant cinematography. I guess that's what happens when you have expectations that are unheard of. The kitchen scene rocked, Btw.

Pretty crazy movie. The Hunger Games definitely borrows a lot from this. This movie just goes all out crazy and sickly hilarious too, like the girl in the video at the beginning.

B+

One question though: the "winner" they show at the begining? Was that girl a winner of another Battle Royale? I kept expecting to see her during the movie.

Yeah, one class every year is selected to participate in the BR Act.

Chiaki Kuriyama, GoGo in Kill Bill, stared in this movie (yellow track suit girl).
