 The Deep Blue Sea
The Deep Blue Sea Quote: The Deep Blue Sea is a British drama film directed by Terence Davies and starring Rachel Weisz, Tom Hiddleston and Simon Russell Beale. It is an adaptation of the 1952 Terence Rattigan play The Deep Blue Sea about the wife of a Judge who engages in an affair with an RAF pilot. This film version is funded by the UK Film Council and Film4, produced by Sean O'Connor and Kate Ogborn. Filming began in late 2010 and it was released in the UK in 2011, the year of Terence Rattigan's centenary. It was released in the United States in 2012 by distributor Music Box Films.

 Re: The Deep Blue Sea
An tedious, depressing, and often motionless plot mixed with aggravating "flashback" editing and shots that are drawn out far too long make for one miserable flick. While good acting around (especially by Hiddleston), Weisz's lead character is so unlikeable it ruins any chance for enjoyment.

 Re: The Deep Blue Sea
This film has so many amazing scenes and moments. Hiddleston's fiery exit from the art gallery, for example. Just a minute or two, but so -alive- with passion and humanity. Or this great line from arguably the third act's most poignant scene:
"A lot of rubbish is talked about love. You know what real love is? It's wiping someone's ass, or changing the sheets when they've wet themselves, and letting 'em keep their dignity so you can both go on. Suicide? No one's worth it."
The power of the moment, with the Weisz character and her sense of enormous romantic tragedy sharing a space with this proud, stern, no-nonsense woman just driving forward as best she can, hit me hard.

I don't think our opinions of a film have ever been so far apart before, David. Most critics do seem to love it, so you are in the majority, but I just don't see any of it...

 Re: The Deep Blue Sea
The Deep Blue Sea
While not one of the most enjoyable films I've ever seen, I do appreciate it for it's filmic content. It's very slow, a little too slow actually. The film starts with a 10-minute passage where the same song plays for the duration and only one line of dialogue is uttered. That's enough to drive anyone to sleep, but it does set the foundation of intrigue to the film, and if you can get passed that, then the rest is interesting, but still awfully slow.
There were a lot of questions that I wanted answers to, and so I stayed with the film. It sets up circumstances well, and I kept second-guessing them in my head. It centers on a woman (Weisz) that takes a risk of leaving her husband for a younger toy-boy, and she ends up with neither. For me, I saw it as a film of lifting burdens. All characters, Hester lifts the burden of love, and while upset about it, it ends with her being free and "seeing the light" to a degree. Freddie's burden is lifted too; he has a clingy 1950s broad yet he's a drinker, a socialiser, a youngster at heart. This film shows you the different types of love and makes you think about them with regards to what you know and have in your life. If only it was pacier.
One scene I really thought was poignant was the underground scene of the men and women hiding during the war, but not because of this, it was more the reason why Weisz didn't commit suicide then. Her husband saved her, in a round about way. She remembered a time she spent with her husband in the same place as she was just going to kill herself, so while she was divorcing him, him being the decent gentleman that he is, unbeknownst to him, he saved her life. That's how I saw it.
I really enjoyed Tim Hiddlestone's performance. This is more his type of role, it suits him so well. He shouldn't have ever made The Avengers or Thor. He's better than that. Weisz was good as the English rose type of character. I liked the typically English setting, language and theme. I've missed that a lot recently just watching Chinese and American product. I can grade this rather highly on the quality of content, but rather low on the enjoyment factor. It's like a typical Oscar film; most of them are good and powerful for one-off viewings, but you couldn't sit down on a Saturday night and enjoy the hell out of them.

Weisz is fantastic and really drives the film home. The last 10 minutes are just wonderful.

I basically agree with what Viper said. It had some nice moments, Hiddleston was really good but overall it left me cold. Could have cared less for Weisz character.
