Loved it as well. I appreciated the opening sequence and I liked how the characters were explored during the film.
Plus, the Carrot Top commentary on the dvd is Priceless.

After hearing the immense amount of positive buzz about THE RULES OF ATTRACTION, I rented it with a lot of anticipation. It sounded sexy and interesting and featured several talented actors, including up-and-coming stars Jessica Biel and Kate Bosworth. However, when I watched it, I got something completely different than I was expecting. Marketed as an offbeat teenage comedy-drama, this was in fact a mind bending and sexually provocative film. It was very unorthodox and not mainstream in the slightest, which is the main reason I believed it bombed in theatrical release. It features a lot of great performances, especially from lead James Van Der Beek, but in the end it's just too strange and weird for its own good. Solid but overrated.

6/10 (B-)

Very shallow film but I somehow really enjoyed it... I won't give a grade for now.

Miseable and bordering on offensive. You know in a movie where the first scene involvs an annoying girl passing out in a party and waking up to have someone raping her who throws up on her while being on video, that you're in for something that is either gravely insightful, or promenading horrific situations around on screen in a desperate attempt to come off as profound. Tasteless, and lacking redeeming qualities (kinda like Kids) Attraction doesn't even bother with trying to make a general statement about STD's. It instead tries to use these vastly manipulative and horrific situations to do character sketches. It fails miserably, since the characters are all pretty abnoxious and lack depth. They just mope alot.

I really like this movie, eventhough it switched chapters (Victor's storyline) and plots around, deviating it from Bret Easton Ellis' novel. I really wish that Christian Bale had reprised his Patrick Bateman role here.

Favorite Moment: Faye Dunaway and Swoosie Kurtz as rich, alcoholic geezers.

I absolutely agree with everything you are saying here, and I would give it the same grade as well.

It might be known as a cult classic, but its just overrated trash in my opinion. Definitely nothing to praise about.

Most people on movie boards say that it is a cult classic and I am one of the people that definetely consider it one.

Huge bump..

In what it could have been a MAJOR mistake due to the love it/hate it status surronding this flick, I blind bought this - yeah, I'm crazy (and I usually don't do this? but it was very cheap for a special edition, so I thought "What the hell - if I don't like it, I offer it to someone as a gift  ")

... and I loved it

People calling it shallow are so missing the point, lol.. even though I totally, and I mean totally understand the hate around this, this is really the true anti-teen movie, going deeper and deeper than the other shallow teen movies.. and most of all, refusing to play safe..

The cast is all incredible, the use of music couldn't be any better, the screenplay is very deranged, but in a good ("Tarantinesque") way - after all, this was the same guy who co-wrote Pulp Fiction with Tarantino, and the editing is one of the best works of this decade so far..

The beginning-ending, the first meeting with the split-scren, the Dick character ( ), the suicide sequence and the eurotrip (among others) are all so memorable that I doubt even the haters forgot them..

It is not a movie for everyone and I don't expect everyone to love it or even like it. I know I did. It is provocative, not very deep and outrageous at times, but it did hit the right notes for me. I enjoy Bret Easton Ellis' style and I feel that this work was adapted here very well, just like it was in American Psycho. I would have never thought that James Van Der Beek could have pulled it off, but hell he did a great job as Jason Bateman. Roger Avary did a great job directing the movie and I loved its visual style and the editing/cinematography with Victor's travellogue being the best example of it. It is certainly a case of a love/hate movie and I happen to be in the love camp. I thought that the culture portrayed in the movie was mostly well represented.

A difficult movie to grade. On the one hand, it's quite disturbing, overtly confusing, and utterly pointless. On the other, it's darkly comical, occasionally brilliant, and frequently hilarious. Definitely one of a kind. Some parts of it are disgusting in their offensiveness, whilst others are incredible in their wit. Some of the comic gems are Victor's recap of his Eurotrip and the character of Dick - who has a brilliant, five minute showing, and then never shows up again. The plot winds about, making little to no sense but capturing attentions anyway. The characters are sad, pathetic, and deeply intriguing. The cinematography and editing are a bit flashy but worthy of it. The music is well-chosen but can be a bit over the top at times. All in all, a wildly original and depressingly dark film.

Post Re: The Rules of Attraction
I absolutely love this film. Saw it theatrically opening weekend, bought the DVD right away upon release, and then bought the Blu-ray when that came out. Both the book and film are favorites of mine. The characters are incredibly intriguing and the style of the film is stunning. Not the easiest of novels to adapt into film, I really can't complain at all with the job Roger Avary has done. There are some changes from the novel (when aren't there?) but I don't really think the film could have been adapted any better. So many great scenes in this. The split-screen scene, the dinner, suicide, Victor's vacation, and the finale are all favorites.

It's a dark and funny satire, but also very sad and kind of beautiful. One of 2002's best.

9/10 (A)

Magicmike gets the HUGE bump achievement. That was a 6 year gap.

I still like the movie and the carrottop commentary as I repeat my original post years long ago. Holy Canoli
