Re: The Cabin in the Woods
I've seen this twice since theaters and honestly, at least for me, it really doesn't hold up all that well. I still really dig it, but I'd have expected it to have much better re-watch value.
I know I'll be in the minority, but I honestly prefer Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil.

This movie kind of sucks. So overrated.
Tucker and Dale is much better and funnier.

While it's undeniably unique I don't believe the movie is nearly as clever as it, or everyone else, believes it is.

It's somewhat entertaining, but I definitely agree with this assessment. So many points during the film I felt like I was being hit over the head with moments where the filmmakers were like "DO YOU GET IT?!"

Umm, this is the best thing the horror genre has produced in years.

I like how people use "in your opinion" when someone responds to their own definitive statement of quality.

Re: The Cabin in the Woods
Finally got around to watching this. I have to say I enjoyed it quite a bit, but unlike most on here, I think it loses steam by the film's finale. I kind of wish it was more to it then just "Evil Gods" an entire corporation wiped out in 5 minutes. The last 15 minutes are just so rushed that you don't really enjoy anything. I would have preferred something much darker and sinister then evil gods. It's mayhem that works for the most part, but it's rushed, and for a organization that is so well prepared, they get destroyed way too quickly. In that aspect I find the film bit off more than it could chew, and again would have worked better if this was the first in a franchise of films, especially since they go for the bleak ending anyway. The reason the kids winning doesn't work is because the actors are paper imitations and there's no reason to root for them. You want the company to succeed. They should have just been the main part of the plot. I would have loved to see the selection process for instance. I think because the film is not scary at all it doesn't need to keep all of the intentions of the company a mystery until late in the film. They should have just immersed themselves in making the ultimate "deconstructing a genre" type of film.
As for the actual horror film. It only works because of the comedy elements. It's every cliche in the book. I do find it refreshing everyone is not typical and they are chemically altered, but again that should have been developed more. I did find it refreshing that the stoner is the one that figures it all out for the change, but he is easily the worst actor of the bunch.
It may sound like I disliked it, but I really liked it, just feel it could have been truly great. It's hilarious, has great atmosphere, and wraps it's story it's trying to do pretty well. Main issue is it's not scary at all, and the characters of the horror aspects make it impossible for you to root for them, and the members of the company are great, but they are underdeveloped at the sake of being secretive.
B+ for me, I enjoyed it a lot while watching it.

I still love this movie a ridiculous amount. I watched it again recently. I've seen it a ton of times and it holds up so well.

Re: The Cabin in the Woods
I enjoyed the hell out of this movie. It's about as clever with the deconstruction of its subgenre as Scream was with slasher films.
A-
Fun fact: When I went and saw this film over its opening weekend with a big Joss Whedon fangirl, I bailed on going to a free concert where the main act was this white rapper from Washington. Fast forward less than a year, and that white rapper from Washington had the top-charting song in the country.

Re: The Cabin in the Woods
Uneven pacing. Inconsistent tone. Venturing into horror and comedy at the same time, the movie packs neither enough scares nor bizarre moments to impress.

Re: The Cabin in the Woods
This was... weird. I understand they "made" it like every other cliche horror movie, but that doesn't mean it was entertaining knowing that it was all set up that way. The lead was the best part of the movie, and most of the third act was really cool/enjoyable. But the ending kind of sucked.
B?

Re: The Cabin in the Woods
I remember when I first watched this I was bored and getting annoyed. I was really not liking it but then weather intervened. The power went out before they got to the cabin and we all got passes to come back. I come back and watch it again but this time all the way through and I love it. I liked the scares, the story, and the whole idea of this ancient ritual governments around the world do to satisfy the ancient ones underground. I would love a prequel to this and I don't mind how it ended.

Re: The Cabin in the Woods
Though I had questions... How many gods are there? In each city they do the rituals? Obviously if one location fails, the world is doomed, so wouldn't the world already have been doomed? If the other places failed, what was the point of them anyway?
