 My Week with Marilyn
My Week with Marilyn Quote: My Week with Marilyn is a British drama film directed by Simon Curtis and written by Adrian Hodges. It stars Michelle Williams, Kenneth Branagh, Eddie Redmayne, Dougray Scott, Judi Dench and Emma Watson. Based on two books by Colin Clark, it depicts the making of the 1957 film The Prince and the Showgirl, which starred Marilyn Monroe (Williams) and Laurence Olivier (Branagh). The film focuses on the week in which Monroe spent time being escorted around Britain by Clark (Redmayne), after her husband, Arthur Miller (Scott), left the country.
Principal photography began on 4 October 2010 at Pinewood Studios. Filming took place at Saltwood Castle, White Waltham Airfield and on locations in and around London. Curtis also used the same studio in which Monroe shot The Prince and the Showgirl in 1956. My Week with Marilyn had its world premiere at the New York Film Festival on 9 October 2011 and was shown at the Mill Valley Film Festival two days later. The film was released on 23 November 2011 in the United States and 25 November in the United Kingdom.

 Re: My Week with Marilyn
Oh, and I wonder how much Colin Clark's name will be sullied this Oscar season. With this movie doing well and maybe garnering two, three, four Oscar nominations, the voracity of his story will surely be questioned. I don't want to comment with any faux-authority, but I've read Monroe fans/"scholars" find certain of his claims highly dubious. Seems he first wrote and published an account of the Prince and the Showgirl set, of the creative tensions and such. And this just mentioned a few encounters with Monroe, as an actress on the set. This did well enough, then a few years later he came out with another tome claiming he and Marilyn were involved and had this magical, intense week and he was there for her miscarriage and everything else.

 Re: My Week with Marilyn
Definitely underwhelming.
Williams is great but the film just feels slight and forgettable unfortunately.

 Re: My Week with Marilyn
I loved it, a lot actually. The acting from everyone was great but Michelle Williams just blew it out of the water. Like David said, she is one of the finest actresses of our generation. She was so real, after awhile I forgot I was watching Michelle Williams, honestly. She's that good. It's such a fun movie and it's so enjoyable and it made me research the topic when I got home. Loved it. One of the best movies of the year.
9/10
Oh, and the part with her miscarriage I didn't really get. When I watched it in the movie it was a mention it once and then forget about it kind of deal, but then when I was reading online, she actually had a miscarriage after finished filming Some Like it Hot. So that's kind of confusing..

 Re: My Week with Marilyn
Really liked it, though it loses a bit of steam in the last 20 minutes
Williams is great. It's not just an imitation. It's a weaving of her own Marilyn. Which fits because this is a film meant to be from Colin's perspective as his memoirs were - and as Gunslinger points out and others have, there's a hefty scoop of reasons and statements from people on the set to believe he was full of crap.
What's left then is a dream like series of events, part of it true naturally, part of it the work of a unreliable narrator working with the image and painted persona of Marilyn. And this dream like surface Marilyn is what defines her and her story, perfect for Hollywood. We still don't really get under the surface of Marilyn. She's still 10 feet underwater, as Olivier says
Loved the Vivian Leigh scenes on that note. The anti Marilyn at that stage.

 Re: My Week with Marilyn
My Week with Marilyn as a whole suffers from its perspective through the eyes of Colin Clark, who sadly is not interesting enough as written or played by Eddie Redmayne to anchor the film. What really gives this film life is the striking zest with which Michelle Williams plays Marilyn Monroe. The normally demure actress channels some of her style to show Marilyn at her most quiet and introspective, but also manages to perfectly bring her breathy, charismatic side to life. This is obviously a difficult part to play, and Williams nails it. The supporting cast is also quite good, particularly an over-the-top Kenneth Branagh as the impatient Laurence Olivier. Like the recent Young Adult, this is a film elevated to a higher level by the superior work of its lead actress. B

I can hardly remember this movie. Just the smudges and outlines of it. So dull.

 Re: My Week with Marilyn
My Week with Marilyn may not have the most out there script, but its the performances and the look of the film that make it all the more powering. Michelle Williams gives one of her career-best performances here (still unsure if it beats her Blue Valentine role) as she steps beautifully into the life of Marilyn Monroe. She adds the right kind of varying emotions and attention needed for the character. Kenneth Branagh pulls into his character quite well and I hope he can somehow scrape together an Oscar nomination as well. Eddie Redmayne is decent, if not a bit dull. I also enjoyed Emma Watson's small supporting role here. Sure it is not a complete biopic of Marilyn's life, but it gives us enough of the up and downs she went through to make a gripping piece. ***1/2

MY WEEK WITH MARILYN - 7/10 ( B )
A good film with an incredible performance by Michelle Williams. She was the perfect choice for Marilyn Monroe. The film itself, while enjoyable, left me thinking, "That's it?" But the performance by Williams makes it a must see.
