Disappointing considering its a dream team of actors (John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart)

You would have expected more but it still delivers into a solid western film.

I get the same vibe from it, but \its one of those movies where its disappointing but still better than 90% of the other stuff out there.

Have you seen it? It's not disappointing in the least. This is one of the most brilliant films ever made. I was shocked that they even made westerns like this.

My thoughts after my first viewing:
Spoiler: show
Quote:
It's one of the more intricately plotted and planned films I've ever seen. All kinds of stuff is crammed into the story, and most of it is important. It's pretty amazing how well all this stuff works.

Beyond a wonderful story, this film has plenty more to offer. The acting is great. I'm not at all familiar with Stewart in westerns, but here he's brilliant. He's that kinda timid, bookish guy you don't expect to be a western hero. He spends most of his time wearing an apron. Hahaha, it really is an inspired character. Everyone else is good too, but man, I was not expecting what Stewart gave.

The film is also really, really funny. It's full of little unexpected moments of pure comedy. The 'Marshal' gets pushed into an open door at one point, and his ass breaks the lower glass panes. Just stuff like that, stuff that doesn't sound hilarious, but in the film really works to lighten the mood and make ya laugh.

Also, there's at least one scene (the newspaper man's drunken performance for himself in the office, if you've seen it), that easily ranks among my ten or twenty favorite scenes in film history.

Jimmy Stewart should have done more westerns.

Really after 1950 he started to look like a wiser, older man and he was perfect for those cowboy roles.

This is the West, sir. When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.

The death of the classic Western. And what a glorious death it is.

This one is almost too good for the genre. Totally brilliant. The pairing of Wayne and Stewart is every bit as great as expected. Throw Lee Marvin in there, and it's even more awesome.

Also maybe the best final line in cinema.

Probably ranks right below Quiet Man as my favorite Ford film. Jimmy Stewart is fantastic in this. Like kypade said, I really enjoyed how so much is crammed into the film but yet it all goes together so well. It is hilarious and each scene works so well. Liberty Valance is such an asshole and it is played off with great attention. Overall, just fantastic.
