 Re: Pandorum
I -loved- this and am borderline depressed it's going to go mostly unseen due to intense competition and lax advertising.
Pandorum just hit every note action/horror/science fiction note perfectly. It's atmospheric, gory, and intense, yet also very well-acted and thought-provoking. Ben Foster proves he can play the hero as well as he plays quirky psycho supporting roles. The last 20 minutes just kicked unholy amounts of ass.
Others may disagree--I see critics aren't too pleased--but I loved Pandorum and urge genre fans to see it before it closes in two weeks.

 Re: Pandorum
Of the three new releases Pandorum got the best reviews. It is sad it didn't do well. I actually saw tons of ads for this on tv but it came out at the wrong time. Too many R rated flicks killed this.
Ah well. I will watch it on DVD.

Darkness... quiet... MONSTERS... RUN... implausible fight scene... darkness.. quiet... MONSTERS... RUN... repetitive implausible fight scene... darkness... quiet... tiny nugget of plot advance... darkness... quiet... Ho hum. This is strictly for fans of mindless horror. Anyone else looking for a bit of a logical story is SOL. They barely even bothered to develop the supposedly main storyline about the whole "Pandorum" paranoia thing... Sheesh! Luckily the actors were okay, at least I think they were, what with the tiny bit of material they had to work with. But... I loved the backstory and the last five minutes - - I would've much preferred seeing a full sci-fi movie based on that snippet of story - - and then I would've been happy even if they included a 10 minute "MONSTERS... RUN..." interlude. out of

Meh, I'm extremely mixed on this one. While it wasn't that good and so god damn unoriginal, I still kinda enjoyed it for what it was... So C for me. http://nevadasagebrush.com/blog/2009/09 ... -familiar/

It was a cliche', lame version of Aliens...With Dennis Quaid delivering some unintentionally hilarious lines.

 Re: Pandorum
I was pleasantly surprised. The movie seems to be making up the plot as it goes along (there's an overabundance of back story that drips out in frustratingly incremental doses,) but then the nifty ending roles around. What really held my attention up to the climax was the gorgeous production design. It didn't hurt that the monsters were surprisingly neat. The cinematography far outclassed the rather confusing editing, with a whole bunch of highly creative shots.
But in all fairness, I have super low standards when it comes to this sort of movie. If you're a sucker for space horror (Zing will totally dig it) it's worth a shot. If not, avoid.

 Re: Pandorum
From the marketing it looked like Event Horizon mixed with The Descent. Is that a correct impression?

Well, I really liked the two films I just mentioned. If it weren#t for my exams I'd have seen it already, but I might have to wait for another week or so.

This movie was a blast. I'm disappointed by the mixed reactions I see here.

 Re: Pandorum
3/10 -> D-
The story is a mix of various existing movies and sci-fi novels/short stories. It doesn't offer anything new and it doesn't do ANYTHING to build on that. I'd actually compare the movie to the last part of Sunshine. That mediocre part when the movie took turn toward being a full slasher in space. Instead of one crazy man, we have a bunch of human mutants. Characters are in a race against time (and mutants and hey I almost forgot - a deranged crazy man) to save the remaining mankind and need to restart the reactor (again all similar to Sunshine).
The potential was there, but it was buried somewhere in incredibly incapable hands of the whole crew.
The characters are dumbed down versions of your under-average slasher characters. They're incapable of grasping that they can actually help each other instead of fighting and going they're own way. And when their brains finally understand that we learn that the "sword" yielding man is actually a peasant woken from hibernation and the kung-fu fighting hot chick is actually a scientist!!! Oh my.
And they're presented that they're actually skillfull at fighting these mutants, or that's at least implied (why carry weapons that slow you down if you're surviving by hiding and running?). They always attack in packs, so they should be able to at least back them off a bit. But three of them fight one of these creatures and barely beat it. It's laughable.
Sci-fi should be thought provoking. It's what makes sci-fi great. This movie insults intelligence. Though I'm afraid it's looks and flashy screens will blind people into believing this is one solid sci-fi action flick. It might be OK as an action flick, but it fails badly at being sci-fi at that.

 Re: Pandorum
Does it matter what "genre" it is? You#re just supposed to judge how good of a movie it is overall.
BTW, I think it's pretty good.

 Re: Pandorum
Certainly it matters. It's not a good movie, it's not enjoyable, and the similar genre movies have done this story (or parts of it, considering this movie cannibalized most of the ship in space sci-fi cliches) much, much better. I have to compare it to something to put it in an overall perspective, no? I certainly won't compare this to cartoons or romantic comedies.

 Re: Pandorum
You misunderstand me. You said it's a passable action movie, but a bad sci-fi movie. The overall impression, however, should be just of a "movie" without genre affiliation. Just how solid of a movie it was.

 Re: Pandorum
It's an action sci fi movie.
Passable action+bad sci-fi=lousy action sci-fi movie.
There I finished the equation now. Is it better now?

 Re: Pandorum
this is basicall a sci fi original movie with some stars, and movie (Saw) violence. It has some really terrible editing, and the monsters are pretty ridiculous. I was expecting something better with the early faint praise. But its a HBO latenight movie at best.

 Re: Pandorum
I dug this, despite its slavish adherence to genre tropes. It does what it does well, and the twist is pretty nifty.

Not too original but I found this film to be very thought provoking. Much like The Incredible. Here is my review of it or rather an in-depth analysis of it which I would like to hear some thoughts on. http://devilmayhem666.blogspot.com/2011 ... dorum.htmlI gave it a B-.
