I only saw about 30 minutes over my friend's house, but from what I did see, I wasn't all that impressed...

I love this movie. The acting is top notch and some of the battle scenes are amazing. There are some slow parts, which could have been edited a bit more, but overall it's a fantastic movie.

Meh. Wonderful production values. The sets and the costumes were simply amazing. The performances were great too. It was just so....boring. The action it did have was pretty bland, and it completely stopped action for the middle third of the movie. Granted, it really helped stress the theme, and it was really well filmed, I just didn't like it all that much.

My second favorite film of 2003 (behind ROTK, of course). It's almost perfect even though I think some of the battle scenes are a little confusing. Crowe is good, but Paul Bettany really shines in this. He was robbed of an Oscar nomination. My grade: A-.

Didn't like it at all. The movie has great production values and some strong performances, but I just couldn't get into it. Horribly paced and well, for lack of a better word, boring.

I wanted a series of these, damnit. It was not at all what I was expecting. And it's rewatchability is seemingly endless. Makes a great double feature with the original Mutiny On The Bounty. Love it.

It's a perfect recap of life on a boat back in the day. Ie- BORING

It's got great performances, production values, and it stands apart as being a good story... but I just can't sit through it more than once.

So true. I agree with everything. Very well-made technically, but also very tedious and boring in the second third of the movie.

I really think this one is boring. The performances are alright and it's amazing to look at but it's just so boring and pretty much pointless. It could've been a lot better.

5/10 (C-)

Gah.

I know, the *it was boring* thing does sound naive but it was! (IMHO of course) Heh. I didn't really enjoy it.... Well made though.

Good Points

Crowe looking and sounding the part. Hard as nails but with a sharp mind it makes for an engaging character
The attention to detail is pleasing. Hell they probably made all the cast members get scurvy just for the movie
The cat and mouse chase's between the British and French ship are taut and exciting

Bad Points

An all sausage affair. Ah well Couldn't really expect female deckhands could I.
The pacing slows a bit to much in the middle section
That weevil joke is bloody awful, tell me who wrote it so I can hire a hitman
All that sea talk never sits well with me. Starboard, Port, Stern its crazy talk.

Overall B+

Even tough I loved it in theaters I'm surprised it has such a great rewatchability for me on DVD.

Master and Commander: Feel the Sea in Your Face!

First off, the series of 20 novels, two of which this movie is adapted from, is IMHO, truly an all-time historical adventure classic, brimming with humor, action, and intrigue. Trying to capture the detailed story and colourful characters to the depth of the books is simply impossible, and for a person who hasn't read the books in advance, I'd bet the plot in this film is hard to follow or perhaps boring. But to a fan of the books such as myself, the visual representations of life on the ship, the ship itself, and the battle situations were awesome. (As opposed to the botch job they did on both the story and visuals in LOTR...) Russell Crowe made a fine Capt. Aubrey, but unfortunately Paul Bettany did not portray Dr. Maturin as the true match of Aubrey he is in the books (this I attribute more to the script and direction than to the actor). I guess I would say that it came out pretty much as well as could be expected, which is pretty high praise for an adaptation of such hallowed source material.

4 out of 5... for fans of the books.

it is a tad boring but I like some of the slow stuff.

It is not an action historical flick.

It is historical film that is really a story about a relationship between a captain and his best friend.

It is a really good film and yes it does not have that much violence or any women in it or swearing or a lot of action but it is a good film. For crying out loud does a film need to have big boobs, swearing and big fighting naked man and robots to be good these days??? :grrr:

No, it just needs a good story. Something that M&C had only in parts of its tedious existance.

to me I found the story to be boring between the doctor and the Captain.

I enjoyed the film because I am a fan of British History and tall mast ships and such.

I also liked the violin scenes...

I need to watch it again, but from what I remember, this is a grand, epic piece of moviemaking. Crowe and Bettany are great together.

Forget this so-so movie adaptation - - read the books.

The 20 volumes that make up the Aubrey-Maturin series are a delightful rich treat of genre literature. It is a rare pleasure which shouldn't be squandered, but rather savored as the superb recreational reading that lays ahead. If I hadn't read them already, I'd seriously consider saving them for a glorious treat to look forward to later in life.

This series is magnificent.
