The Bourne Ultimatum

Quote:
The Bourne Ultimatum is a 2007 American spy film directed by Paul Greengrass and loosely based on the Robert Ludlum novel of the same title. This film is the third in the Bourne film series, being preceded by The Bourne Identity (2002) and The Bourne Supremacy (2004). The fourth movie, The Bourne Legacy, is scheduled for release in July 2012.

Matt Damon reprises his role as Ludlum's signature character, former CIA assassin and psychogenic amnesiac Jason Bourne. The film picks up the storyline from the previous film, and continues Bourne's saga after he escapes from authorities in Moscow. The script was written by Tony Gilroy, Scott Z. Burns, George Nolfi and an uncredited Tom Stoppard. The producers were Frank Marshall, Pat Crowley and Paul L. Sandberg.

The Bourne Ultimatum was produced by Universal Pictures and was released on August 3, 2007, in North America, where it grossed $69.3 million in ticket sales in its first weekend of release, making it the highest August opening in the U.S. and Matt Damon's highest grossing film with him in the lead. Although all three films have been commercially successful and critically acclaimed, The Bourne Ultimatum is the only film in the trilogy to have been nominated for any Academy Award, winning all three of its nominations for Best Film Editing, Best Sound, and Best Sound Editing at the 80th Academy Awards.

Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass insist The Bourne Ultimatum's the end of the series following amnesia-suffering Jason Bourne. This is reflected in the film itself as it delves into the rogue assassin's past, including the behavior modification and training he underwent upon admission to Treadstone, a top secret CIA operation.

The series ends with a bang in regards to action and suspense. Through extensive use of hand-held cameras and rapid-fire editing, the viewer is placed inside the action as Bourne, his allies, and his pursuers crisscross the globe engaging in car chases, hand-to-hand combat, and shootouts. I can't remember the last time action was this fast, fierce, and furious, or staged in such inventive and realistic ways. I was especially blown away by a three-person cat-and-mouse game played out through the streets and over the rooftops of the Moroccan city of Tangier. This extended action sequence ends with a bone-crunching fistfight in an apartment, not much of which is left undamaged at the end.

The action may be the focal point, but the plot more than satisfies as well. The aforementioned revelations involving Bourne's past and true identity are satisfying and compelling, and I appreciated the way they were doled out during the chasing and fighting. Most films of this genre pause the action and disregard the forward momentum for dull scenes of exposition; this doesn't. The metal-crunching and body-bruising go hand-in-hand with the storytelling.

Matt Damon slips into his signature role with ease. By this point, he's perfected his portrayal of Jason Bourne, a clever and driven individual who's haunted by his use as a blunt instrument by the CIA. Also returning are Joan Allen (as business-minded but sympathetic CIA mandarin Pamela Landy) and Julia Stiles (as conflicted Treadstone operative Nicolette Parsons). Stiles is especially good in an expanded role. It's hinted her character may've shared a past romance with Bourne, which he, of course, doesn't remember. New to the cast is David Strathairn (known for his recent Oscar-nominated portrayal of CBS newsman Edward R. Murrow in George Clooney's Good Night, and Good Luck.), who oozes unpleasantness as a corrupt CIA official behind a new assassin-training operation.

If this is indeed the end of the Bourne trilogy, I'm sad to see it go. It has brought a new level of intelligence and creativity to its genre (James Bond, eat your heart out) and found a place on my list of all-time favorite movies. But I am also glad it hasn't fizzled out or been run into the ground. Each successive entry has been superior to its predecessor. This is a masterful note on which to end a masterful trilogy.

To use a very old critical saying... if you see one movie this year, see The Bourne Ultimatum.

A+ ... 10/10 ... ****/****

All around a good review but i fail to see how you can give it a 10 on 10. I mean, walking out of that film, didn't you feel like your eyes wanted a written apology for being forced to sit through that camera work?

No, I personally love Paul Greengrass' filming style. Hand-held cameras and rapid-fire editing can be annoying (see: Transformers), but he does it so incredibly well. I felt as if I was in the center of the intense action, and I loved it.

On another note, can't wait to see this movie again.

IMO, there's one way Supremacy's superior to Ultimatum: as cool as Ultimatum's Manhattan-set car chase was, I prefer the Moscow chase in Supremacy.

Hmm.... I'm not so sure. That car chase scene was pretty brutal, specially the end.

Is this movie worth seeing if you don't like dumb action movies (hated Live Free or Die Hard) and haven't seen the first two?

You should watch the other 2.

The films are smart. They're not dumb action films. Its a character driven series.

BOURNE ULTIMATUM

600 seat=full
Time 1930-080307
Trailers:
The Kingdom-more flashy trailer emphasizing the action and less talk. I think it's better.
TDK-excellent teaser and Heath Ledger sounds Peeerrrrfect.
Beowulf-totally reminds me of 300 and after seeing this trailer I'm IN.
National Treasure 2-same ole trailer and I'm still interested.
American Gangster-same ole trailer and I'm more interested.

Film

This film was pretty good, I think. I enjoyed watching it and it had lots of tense moments, somewhat minimal dialogue and quality action. The story was very limited as it's just Bourne trying to uncover his real identity so even though he's hopping the globe I felt somewhat confined in it's presentation. I thought Matt damon and the cast was top notch although again the dialogue seemed very limited. In fact, there are a few moments where there is no dialogue and just pauses and facial shots. I was half/half on the camera work in the film. I know this is Greengrass's style but it can get very aggravating. For example, near the beginning Bourne is having a conversation with someone and the camera isn't stationary. It seemed handheld. I don't get the point of that. It doesn't make the scene more "real" or less real. Just have the camera fixed and not wobbling all over the place. That's my only real gripe besides the quick fast edits when they are hopscotching all over Europe. As to the action, I thought it was top quality and as the film builds and reaches an action piece that takes place I felt the buildup was worth the wait for each particular one such as Bourne's duel with the agent in Morocco. Overall, although the film had some things to nitpick about I really enjoyed the movie.

Grade - A

Best yet - really meaty, pulling it all together. Very, very good film. I may give it a perfect score, not sure yet (that is, 4 out of 4). I need to sleep on it, but I thought this was excellent.

A fine end to a great series. The camera work took a few minutes to adjust to, but once I got accustomed to it, it drew me in. The action was all top notch. I especially enjoyed the chase in Morroco. The action slowed down at the end, but appropriately so. A

Best in the series, easily. The shaky-cam didn't bother me as much in this film as it did in Supremacy, I think I got used to it and actually kinda liked it to some extent. But yeah, this film kicks major ass. It's just non-stop action. And it's intelligent. What more could I ask for?

The editing in the fight scenes is so much better than in Supremacy. It's still shaky, but the shots hold long enough that you can actually tell what's going on.

Also, this movie is so very intense. I was literally at the edge of my seat, leaning over. Namely during the Morocco chase as Bourne tried to get to Nicky before the assassin, and when Vosen was alone with Pamela Landy at the end.

I also really liked the twist on Supremacy's last scene, putting it 2/3rds the way through this movie.

The great thing about the Bourne movies (or at least the two Greengrass has made) is they feature perfect continuity between form and content. The shaky cam aesthetic people bitch and moan about is perfect for this film, because it's the most logical and artistically sensible extension of the films content. The constant motion of the camera is itself a violent act to match the violence on screen.

This is not only a tremendous summer action movie, but one of the best movies of the year so far.

Great Great Action packed Movie, The Car chase was intense, Paul Greengrass' use of the shaking camera added to the effect of the scene. Liked how Nicky Parsons, looked like Bourne's previous lover, kind of brought it all back to the first movie.

I'm going to get ripped apart. Take it easy though, it's my first review. :)

Edit: For some reason it deleted itself when I tried to delete the bad one. I think I know why, but it doesn't really matter. It's the same exact review, just with (I believe) a new link.

The first trilogy that started great and became better and better with every movie. This might be the best actioner since the original Die Hard and it surely is the best trilogy since Indy. What a tremendous movie. A++++++

Wow, you are wrong in so many ways, I can't even list it down. Joan Allen was fantastic as in the second one, Bond before Casino Royale was dead and Casino Royale became what it was because of Bourne. And that this is a continuing story is wanted, that's why we won't get 21 Bournes.

This movie was thoroughly entertaining in every way shape and form.. I thought SPIDERMAN III was the best to offer this summer, but this movie blows it away and never bores you at all.. An "A"... Also, Damon said he wouldn't do anymore of these movies.. If they make a 4th BOURNE movie(and you know they will at some point) who would be a good replacement for Damon?? I'm pretty used to him for the moment and can't imagine anyone else..
