 Re: I Love You, Beth Cooper
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I love you, I Love You, Beth Cooper. Yow - - this one snuck up on me, and took me by surprise! The two leads were incredibly appealing in their diverse portrayals of that dreaded end-o-teen transition to immature adulthood. The story bore considerable resemblance to the one I saw last night in (500) Days Of Summer - - except of course, that Beth Cooper is decidely romantic. And broadly funny - - and by broadly, I mean towel flick to the crotch broad... I never thought Chris Columbus could convince me of his thesis in this film ("Live Life!"), but lo and behold, I walked out of the auditorium tonight a true believer. Hallelujah to St. Christopher, he can still dispense them miracles when he is sufficiently inspired! This continues his great movie streak to two, after his previous film, the brilliant screen adaptation of Rent... Why didn't anybody wanna go and see it? I guess it's pretty darn old school, what with the talented comic supporting actors, and the episodic story structure - - but, Yee Hah! - - it's a fantastically enjoyable new fairy tale for the ages! This is another one that's gonna steadily build an audience as the years flow by... out of  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I Love You, Beth Cooper was a mildly positive surprise for me. I went in without any expectations and what I got was a bittersweet and charming comedy about growing up, graduating and taking your chances. I didn't expect it to be anything more than just a run-of-the-mill cheap high school comedy, so that was pretty refreshing.
Most of the kudos go to the film's cast. Paul Rust looks way too old for his role, but does pull off the lovable nerd part pretty well. Hayden Panettiere is a great fit for the role (sometimes it seems she's playing herself) and it's definitely the best performance she has delivered to date. Jack Carpenter offers some good comic relief.
Of course the film is very generic in parts and you know exactly the way it'll turn out about two minutes into the film. It's also some breezy John Hughes-lite fun that does not demand much from the viewer and instead offers 100 entertaining minutes of every geek's fantasy. Maybe Chris Columbus should just stick to films like this instead of high concept fantasy like Harry Potter or Percy Jackson.
 Re: I Love You, Beth Cooper
I just finished reading the novel that this was based on. It is better, yes (and mostly funnier), but I must say that the movie captured the novel's general spirit rather well.
I absolutely hated it and I usually enjoy these kinds of movies. It was boring and unfunny.
