This film is really good. I'm a big fan of the book, and I found it to be very loyal to the source material. Mara Wilson is really impressive as Matilda, and Danny Devita and Rhea Pearlman are also very good as her careless parents. I was very surprised by Pam Ferris. She does a fantastic job portraying the Trunchbull. She is everything I imagined from the book, and she was really scary, but very convincing in her role. I loved the score in this film, and Danny Devito did a great job at directing. The special effects are a little dated, but it doesn't really effect the film as whole. It's still a hugely entertaining family film, and it's really hilarious at times. I also found Embeth Davidtz as Miss Honey to be really hot.

What happened to Mara Wilson?

nice family movie and gotta love the extra good DD role.

wasn't this part of a book series or by a pretty sucessful author.

She hasn't done much work lately. Her last film was in 2000. It's a shame she showed a lot of promise. I assume she put her career on hold or just stopped acting all together because right now she is attending New York University.

That would be Roald Dahl. He is also the author of Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, and many other classic children books.

This movie is a guilty pleasure of mine. It succeeds because of the very nice mix of touching moments and comedic moments. It actually can be quite funny sometimes, and all the credit has to go to Pam Ferris, who played Principle Trunchbull, as well as some credit to Danny DeVito who played the father (Wormwood).

Pam Ferris just pitched her character with lots of wit and sarcasm, and it worked perfectly. I'll never forget this little bit:

Agatha Trunchbull: Can you spell?
Amanda Thripp: Miss Honey taught us how to spell a long word yesterday. We can spell "difficulty".
Agatha Trunchbull: You couldn't spell "difficulty" if your life depended on it.
Amanda Thripp: She taught us with a poem.
Agatha Trunchbull: (sarcasm to the max with extra mocking) A poem? How sweet. What poem would that be?
Amanda Thripp: Mrs. D, Mrs. I, Mrs. F-F-I. Mrs. C, Mrs. U., Mrs. L-T-Y!
Agatha Trunchbull: Quiet! ... Why are all these women married?

The way Ferris says "A Poem?" in a a high-pitched, mocking voice is hilarious.

I'd give this film a B.
