 The Fourth Kind
The Fourth Kind Quote: The Fourth Kind is a 2009 horror film, starring Milla Jovovich, Elias Koteas and Will Patton. The title is derived from the expansion of J. Allen Hynek's classification of close encounters with aliens, in which the fourth kind denotes alien abduction. The film purports to be based on a true story, and the movie contains what are claimed to be actual clips and records, made by Nome, Alaska psychologist Dr. Abigail Tyler (Jovovich), in a mock-documentary style similar to The Blair Witch Project and Lake Mungo. It purports to faithfully portray events that took place in the year 2000.
The film was panned by many critics and was of a moderate box office success earning over 42.5 million dollars worldwide.

 Re: The Fourth Kind
Is anyone else annoyed that they can just lie and say this is based on real footage? It would be creepy if it were, but it's not. There should be a law against this . The gimmick is used far too often. I also hate how you get stupid people who think it really is real and will argue with you about it. I remember getting into arguments with people over The Texas Chainsaw Massacre being real when the remake came out in 2003.

 Re: The Fourth Kind
THE FOURTH KIND I enjoyed watching this today. I like how they switched from "real" video to movie time to time. I enjoyed the story. It set a good feeling of suspense and uncertainty. I was confused though whether the real footage had any validity to it. I prefer it when films like PA are made and you know it's totally fake but when something like this comes along and "claims" to be somewhat valid I'd like to know what parts were valid. The more disturbing points created were when you hear the doctor just suddenly scream the most frightful screams one can hear on audio and maybe when the guy is levitating in bed speaking sumerian. Two very disturbing well made scenes. grade - B

Yeah, blame that on PARANORMAL ACTIVITY which is just as guilty at this as some other movies.. As for alien abduction being real or not?? Hard to say.. Thousands of people that have described virtually the same thing under hypnosis can't all be wrong about the same thing and be suffering from some sort of mass hysteria.. I guess it's one of those things where "seeing is believing"..

If you're talking about the "demand it" marketing "gimmick" then that's a whole different story, and at least it didn't revolve around a big fat lie.

 Re: The Fourth Kind
Well they had me fooled with the whole thing being fake then. Kinda irks me when marketing adverts a film as being based on actual footage and case studies yet it be phony.
So...good job to marketing and filmmaking but bad taste to the moviegoer.

 Re: The Fourth Kind
http://www.filmcritic.com/misc/emporium ... ourth-KindThe linked review above calls the movie "entertainment fraud." On a related note, I saw this tonight. It was at times interesting but the acting by Milla was lacking (having seen her interviewed, it's hilarious seeing her play a psychologist; not surprisingly, she's not at all convincing). The scenes of the director "interviewing" the "real" Abigail Tyler were offputting and didn't really work since as portrayed, the woman is clearly a nutjob and thus, you never really buy her story, especially once the missing child element is revealed. The mixing of dramatization and faux doc footage also didn't help matters since it inevitably takes the viewer out of the experience, a constant reminder that you're watching a movie, something that makes it nearly impossible to really get invested in the experience. They would have been better off choosing one route (faux doc or movie dramatization) and going with it instead of mixing the two.

 Re: The Fourth Kind
I thought it was one of the worst movies of the year. It was incredibly boring and the mixing of the two film styles was incredibly annoying. PARANORMAL ACTIVITY this isn't.

I saw an advanced screening of this at my college 2 weeks before it came out, and I, along with 95% of the rest of the theater, hated this film. We laughed at its attempt to be a thriller.

A clumsy movie. Trying to mix the "real" footage with the "reenactments" wasn't the best idea. Also the big reveal scenes turn out to be more funny than scary. Aliens come to say: "I Am God. Stop Researching." Really? It kinda completely collapses at the end. Not that it was good to begin with. This should have been a straightforward movie. I think it might have turned out much better.

 Re: The Fourth Kind
I agree with you Joe (Harry). Due to the annoying way this is filmed it's nearly impossible to get fully invested in it. They should have chosen one way of filming it and stuck to it. I'll admit it was interesting at times, but it's just so inconsistent and ludicrous and never scary. It annoys the hell out of me that they tried to pass this off as real.

 Re: The Fourth Kind
Frustrating. I wish director Olatunde Osunsanmi had concentrated on the Milla Jovovich/Elias Koteas scenes, which are atmospheric and involving, and excised the faux-documentary content. The constant reminders what you are watching is based on "real" audio/video recordings and interviews are grating. It's difficult to invest in the storyline when you are so busy considering how "clever" the film and its unorthodox structure is. There is a strong alien-abduction suspense film within The Fourth Kind, but the overall experience is too precious and too MUCH when LESS would have been MORE. I will give credit where credit is due, though: there are a number of jolting, memorable individual sequences and Jovovich and Koteas give strong performances.

Much much better than PA, I enjoyed the way they mixed he "real stuff" with the dramatization, and yes the scene with the tape recorder is fucking scary.
