 La mala educación [Bad Education]
Bad Education Quote: Bad Education (Spanish: La mala educación) is a 2004 Spanish drama film written and directed by Pedro Almodóvar and starring Gael García Bernal, Fele Martínez, Daniel Giménez Cacho and Lluís Homar. The plot is about two reunited childhood friends (and lovers) in the vein of a murder mystery. Sexual abuse by Catholic priests, transsexuality, drug abuse, and a metafiction are also important themes and devices in the plot, which gave the film an NC-17 rating.

I had to put subtitles because I was trying to figure out what the hell they were saying, the Spanish talk to fast and with there accent, its very hard to understand them!
Anyways, the movie is very graphic and quite disturbing, not for everyone, some might find it very disgusting and offensive
Gael Garcia gave a fantastic performance like always and the story is phenomenal, I was so confused from until the Father told what really happened with Ignacio. Nice twist

What's first?
Fantastic film. 2004's best release. Almodovar's second best (behind Talk To Her). A brilliant tweak on the film noir genre, with the femme fatale being a man in drag.

I'm embarrassed for constantly, tastelessly plugging it.

Bite me.
And The Sweet Hereafter probably rounds out the Top 3. It's tough for me to define my absolute favorites, but there isn't a doubt in my mind TCG and LME aren't the two best films ever.

Nah, I hate those three movies.
The Aviator isn't actually that bad (it's just too oscar-baity, has no emotion, etc)...
Although the grade doesn't reflect it, I do think Bad Education's a stronger movie than Match Point. I just felt that 2004 was a very, very strong year (you can only give so many A's! ), with Closer, ESOTSM, Garden State, The Motorcycle Diaries, etc. 2005, to me, was weak...
Don't question me.

There are two reasons why I am glad to own Aviator.
1. Best production design since Titanic. Wow.
2. Cate B. Talk about a phenomenal performance.
Otherwise, it's too tedious to really enjoy. I hardly ever sit down and watch it.
Oh, and we've managed to triple the number of posts in this thread. Hopefully it might inspire some more meaningful discourse.

How dare you change your post when I'm responding. I have to make another post. grr.
2004 seemed weak around this time last year, probably because the Academy went with the safest films for nomination. I really liked Motorcycle Diaries, GS, and Closer, so, indeed, it was a strong year in hindsight.
This year was definitely lacking.

Yes, Garden State and Eternal Sunshine should've been nominated IMO.
But even so, 2004 --------------------------->x100 2005.

Yeah... 2004 was quite awesome.
I really liked this movie, very well crafted. I barely remember it though since I saw it a little less then 2 years ago...

I really didn't like this one. A lot of the movie seemed just gratuitous. It never captured my interest. When it was all over, I just asked myself what the point of the movie was. I wasn't bored or anything and Bernal's acting was actually quite decent, but I really found nothing AT ALL about this film of any interest. The only great thing about it was the score.

Wow, I really agree with you on that, though I wouldn't go as low as a "C". Bernal was utterly fantastic in my opinion, but...what exactly was the point. It had great storytelling but there really wasn't much to tell. Eh, I was very dissapointed, maybe my expectations were too high...great score though.

There was most certainly a point. There is always a point! Oh, this will make for a good discussion!!!
The score is one of my favorites - glad you noticed.

And since when does everything have to have a point? I like what makeshift said (I am notorious for being lazy and stealing bits from other people - get used to it ) - it is a wonderful tweak on the noir type. The femme fetale is actually a man playing a woman who is in fact the man's dead brother who plays a man.
Unlike, say, a Shamalyan movie, the twists here actually work - masterfully. The plot is fabulously executed and, while it might not amount to anything profound - is a perfect example of wonderful acting, writing for the screen, cinematography, and scoring. It is truly a masterpiece - I won't back down on that.
Last shameless Crying Game plug for the night (it has been months since this thread saw one) - perhaps my favorite aspect of that movie, and this movie, was the whole "fluidity" (can't remember who described the role of sexuality like this, but it is the perfect adjective) that the gender and sexuality is presented with. It makes for an interesting exploration of human nature, in my opinion. Very cool stuff, casually put.

I really don't think it was an exploration of "human nature". And if it were there are much better examples, such as Dogville, now that was a masterpiece. Then again, Von Trier is one of my favorite directors of late.
If anything it was good writing, and yes, Bernal gave a fascinating performance which was the highlight of the film to me. That doesn't change the fact that it felt very empty. Like it wanted to have a point, but it...couldn't find one almost.
Sure, the noir aspects were there...I guess. I can see the femme fatale aspect with the genders reversed and yeah that was cool, but...I just couldn't help but think "that was it?".

7/10 -> B-
As good as I remember it. I never liked the twists in this Almodovar film. The big reveal isn't that big and the ending drags on more than it should, ultimately concluding with what's probably the cheapest way out - epilogues for each character, which I think have no room whatsoever in original stories. But Bernal is awesome in this.
