 Re: It's Complicated
This was reaalllyyy enjoyable. I'm a sucker for Nancy Meyers movies (sue me) and It's Complicated doesn't disappoint, although it's probably a notch below Something's Gotta Give. This was a rare romantic comedy in which I actually wasn't sure what the ending would be, and I appreciate Meyers' efforts to provide a little suspense in that area. The talented and highly appealing trio of Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin do great work in this film, and Streep is as luminous as she's ever been. John Krasinski gives a standout supporting performance and threatens to steal several scenes on the basis of reaction shots alone. There are moments of huge belly laughs and moments of thoughtful introspection. Although Meyers wants the audience to have a good time with this movie, she manages to say some interesting things about getting older and falling in and out of love. B+

I thought it was quite cute, though it was one of Nancy Meyer's lesser efforts. I didn't think it was as laugh out loud hilarious as some (though the bit about the vagina was quite hysterical ) but found it very entertaining and never boring. Also, Steve Martin was WONDERFUL in it. 7/10 (B-)

B+ Real Fun Movie...think mainly because of Alec Baldwin and then Meryl Streep...and Steve Martin was pretty much playing the straight guy...which is why I did guess correctly where the movie would end. Anyway, the scenes where the jealous Alec Baldwin was outside the house were very funny!!!!! A Laugh Riot! Plus some other scenes were he was either jealous or just a horny dog.

IT'S COMPLICATED - 8/10 (B+)
This was better than I was expecting. It was very funny and enjoyable. Better than SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE, in my opinion. Meryl is delightful as usual (though her performance in JULIE & JULIA is the better one of 2009), though the adorable John Krasinski nearly steals the show from everyone.

 Re: It's Complicated
Nancy Meyers delivers another hit with It's Complicated. Meryl Streep brings life to her character as always in a very fun and original light. Alec Baldwin is strong too though his character can be a bit offset and annoying. Steve Martin does a good job in his shorter than expected time on screen though the true talent of the film was John Krasinski as he never lost a beat throughout and made his character stand out above the rest. The film is filled with wonderful laughs from start to finish but it also a true romance film that works not only with the couples at hand but the effects on the surrounding family as well. It's Meyers best film in the director's chair yet and one of the best comedies of 2009. ***1/2
Oh and the pot scene = complete comedic gold!

 Re: It's Complicated
When John Krasinski steals your movie by basically just playing his TV character, that's not a good thing. I suppose the best thing I can say about it is that it didn't offend me. The cinematic equivalent of white bread.

 Re: It's Complicated
I think I expected it to be a little bit funnier and a little less dramatic. Meryl Streep did quite well I thought. Actually the entire cast is quite strong with the exception of the kids, especially the graduating boy. I agree with Libs that I honestly could not predict the ending of the movie, which is rare for this type of film.

Heh, the "home, sweet home" line was pretty hilarious.

I wanted to love this, I really did. But I did not end up loving it. It is some nice fun, but it falls more into the league of films like The Holiday and What Women Want than Something's Gotta Give (Meyers' best film to date).
The movie is completely carried by Meryl Streep. Of course Alex Baldwin and John Krasinksi (surprisingly funny!) deliver good supporting turns, but Streep is just on fire. 2009 was a great year for her with turns in this and Julie & Julia, but after having seen both films rather close to each other I've gotta say that I actually preferred her performance in this to her turn as Julia Child. She does this role so effortless with plentiful of charm, wits and proves how great and versatile of an actress she is. I wish she had gotten more awards attention for this film.
I'm not sure what was supposed to be surprising about the ending, though. It was pretty clear to me from start that she'd eventually end up with Steve Martin's character. Which leads me to one gripe with this film - I wasn't a big fan of his character. For whatever reason, I really did not find Martin convincing in this role.
It is a fine comedy, but I think due to the lacking chemistry between Streep and Martin it never rises much above that. It is not very heartfelt and the romance is not as palpable as in Something's Gotta Give. As a romcom it fully delivers on the comedic aspect, but it's lacking on its romantic angle.

 Re: It's Complicated
I didn't really find the old characters doing teenage rebel things to be that interesting or enjoyable. It's a coming of age story for 60 year olds, which comes off primarily as awkward rather than enlightening, at least to a 20 year old. Maybe it resonates with senior citizens, my grandparents thought it was a hoot.....

Exactly. If they don't know how to behave, and feel OK offending others, they get their ass kicked, so they'll think next time before opening their rotten mouths.
