 Vanity Fair (2004)
Vanity Fair Quote: Vanity Fair is a 2004 British-American costume drama film directed by Mira Nair and adapted from William Makepeace Thackeray's novel of the same name. The novel has been the subject of numerous television and film adaptations, and Nair's version made notable changes in the development of main character Becky Sharp.
The film was nominated for "Golden Lion" Award in 2004 Venice Film Festival.

Beautiful movie from an aesthetic point of view. It's just so lush and pleasant to look out. I enjoyed it tremendously. It requires a little bit of patience to sit through, but the movie is rewarding. Reese Witherspoon's performance is Oscar-worthy, and elevates the film through a few slow moments. I'm dissapointed that she has received no end of the year accolades for her performance. The supporting cast is fine too. And Mira Nair manages to produce a clever mix of humor and drama to keep the movie going along. Definitely underrated.

Meh. The film wasn't very good. Reese Witherspoon is great in her role but the movie overall just isn't enjoyable. I liked none of the characters and the story wasn't very good.

I really like Reese Witherspoon, and I want to see this, but they made a HUGE mistake releasing this in a time where movies are typically overlooked or are just plain awful.

The movie is definitely more interesting than I expected it to be. With a 130 minutes running time I thought the director would really be stretching it, but in fact, I found myself thinking that there was always a feeling something was missing in the film. Obviously a lot of stuff was omitted from the book and I think some more would have benefitted the film's richness. The one outstanding thing about the flick, was Reese Witherspoon's performance, foreshadowing her big Oscar break with Walk the Line.

Vanity Fair
Nice film with some terrific performances (Witherspoon, Broadbent, and Eileen Atkins). Shot in my home city of Bath (which is said to be London), it's so very nice to see your own city, and it looks so beautiful on film. I remember when they were filming there actually. Good story, with a great and humorous script. It actually surprised me how much I liked it because I don't normally like these period pieces. Despite me having a bit of a snooze towards the end, I enjoyed it very much. I'll put the snooze down to it being late/watching it in a hot bed. I loved watching the workings of English high society, it's incredibly funny and all so brilliant.
