The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008)
The Day the Earth Stood StillQuote: The Day the Earth Stood Still is a 2008 science fiction film, a remake of the 1951 film of the same name. The screenplay is based on the 1940 classic science fiction short story "Farewell to the Master" by Harry Bates, and the 1951 screenplay adaptation by Edmund H. North.
Directed by Scott Derrickson and starring Keanu Reeves as Klaatu, this version replaces the Cold War theme of nuclear warfare with the contemporary issue of humankind's environmental damage to the planet. It follows Klaatu, an alien sent to try to change human behavior or eradicate them from Earth.
The film was originally scheduled for release on May 9, 2008, but was released on a roll-out schedule beginning December 12, 2008, screening in both conventional and IMAX theaters. The critical reviews were mixed; typically the film was found to be "heavy on special effects, but without a coherent story at its base". In its opening week, the film took top spot at the U.S. box office and has since grossed over $230 million worldwide. The Day the Earth Stood Still was released on home video on April 7, 2009.

No where near as good as the original 1951 classic. This one is just kind of there and kind of pointless. Didn't hate but didn't really find that much to like about it as well.

Fox has really kept this thing well-hidden. It must be an epic turd.
But who cares? Robert Wise's original wasn't very good to begin with.

Re: The Day the Earth Stood Still [2008]
He delivers his arrogant speech about the dangers of violence and war, and says how cool things are back home because they are lorded over by crazy police robots who will destroy them all at the slightest hint of aggression. He suggests Earth abide by the same rules, and warns everyone that they are inviting annihilation should they continue on their war-y path.
Then they leave.
I can only imagine what sort of hackneyed environmental parable it's probably become, particularly with that awful liberal do-gooder Jennifer Connelly involved. She probably thinks she has a social conscience. I think she can't read.

Re: The Day the Earth Stood Still [2008]
5/10 -> C-
I can't say it's an awful or a bad movie. It's just pretty blah one. Pointless as someone already mentioned. I'm gonna puke from all the environmental crap we are being bombarded recently. Everyone is suddenly pro-green and speak about effin carbon footprint.
Acting is OK (apart from Smith Jr. who is probably even more annoying than that other black kid in 24: Redemption I saw today), effects are OK.
It's just that I don't get the point of this movie. The environmental thing/humans being a threat to all of the other life forms could've been a sporadic story to a much bigger and better one.

Re: The Day the Earth Stood Still [2008]
Lots of people die.
Just none in the stadium. Why would there be people in the stadium? It's not sunday! And even if it was... there wouldn't have been any fans there...

Did you actually see the film or are you filling in the blanks? I know Gort uses nanotechnology. Does he nano a building or all of Brooklyn?

He nano's everything. It's awesome.
I did think it was odd that they took some time to devour humans over other objects...

Re: The Day the Earth Stood Still [2008]
Merely average. It's occasionally diverting but then you just leave wondering what the point really was. Keanu Reeves' blank acting style makes him perfectly cast for the role of Klaatu, while Jennifer Connelly is solid in a thankless role for which I assume she got a good paycheck. Jaden Smith's child character is highly irritating but I think that has more to do with the way he's written, while talented actors like Kathy Bates and Jon Hamm are given nothing whatsoever to do. What the movie lacks in intelligence or overall oomph is made up by the special effects, which are indeed impressive, even if they do recall other disaster movies at certain points. This isn't exactly a bad film, it's just rather bland and inconsequential. C
