It's a somewhat underappreciated film. It's not amazing by any means and there have been better movies made about this subject in the past, but I think that the interaction of the film's main three characters is worth a watch. They make the film. Tim Robbins, Rachel McAdams and Michael Peña all get a moment to shine. The way they interact just seems very natural and I bought each of their characters. It must be said, however, that Rachel McAdams clearly stood out here, once again proving that she's one of the brightest talents of her generation. Can't wait until she'll finally get a major dramatic role that will garner her some awards recognition. It's too bad she's being relegated to a supporting role so often (State of Play, Sherlock Holmes, Wedding Crashers). She's a star through and through and I really enjoyed her portrayal of the slightly naive Colee.
While the main characters represent the film's main strength, there's absolutely no one else in the film worth mentioning. All the other characters are just fillers on the trio's way to their destinations. Their personal issues are portrayed in a somewhat arbitrary way and whether it is Tim Robbins' arrival at home or McAdams' visit of her dead boyfriend's parents...it never really strikes close to heart and seems too manufactured. That said, the road trip parts of the film (and those thankfully make up most of it) are entertaining and touching enough to make it worth a viewing. It's nothing that'll stick with the viewer for a while, but it's good while it lasts.
