Really great thriller as well as fish out of water drama. Its a good film with solid direction and a superb performance by Harrison Ford, apart from a relatively weak reason as to why the main baddie gave up in the end, its an interesting film that delves into the very rarely seen on screen Amish population.
Solid A

Superb. One of my favorite films of the 1980s. It is successful on multiple levels: as a police drama, as a romance (Harrison Ford and Kelly McGillis' kiss in the field is so beautiful; genuine passion), and as an exploration of the Amish culture. Ford's performance here is, IMO, his career-best.
A, of course

Witness
Good film. Cute Kid. A unique and memorable score. Some good shots from Peter Weir, a director that I've never really been too familiar with. One shot that was good was when the bent cops were coming over the brow of the hill to search for Book. Nice shot, with some stylishly eerie and cool sounds to carry them over. The film drags in the middle. Despite the very interesting look at Amish life and the romantic simmerings betweek John and Rachel, the middle part was just not in keeping with the first 30 minutes. Also, the ending is weak.
I spotted a young Viggo Mortensen in this. And that blonde guy from Die Hard. He looks very different here, though. Overall, Witness is not among Ford's best work, but it is interesting and beautiful in its own way. Anyway, glad I've seen it.

One of my favorite films ever. Riveting mystery/suspense film. Moving love story. Interesting, if fairly romanticized exploration of the Amish lifestyle. Amazing original score by the wonderful Maurice Jarre. The scene where they join together to construct the barn is pure magic, and, on the flip side, the death of the one cop in the silo scared me as a child.

Re: Witness
The barn scene is nice. I kept seeing a narrative that just wasn't there, though.

Re: Witness
Well made film, solid score and cinematography make it a good watch, but it misses some kind of punch to stand out. It's trying to dip both into the police detective and romance areas and ends up not really succeeding in either. So I'm a bit surprised it did that well at the box office, 8th highest grossing film of 1985. I guess it shows what a star Ford was at the time, and he's good in it too, as are McGillis and Haas as his Amish co-stars and a nice role from Danny Glover too. But if the highlights of the film are McGillis' topless scene and Viggo Mortensen first film appearance then it's just not that great. It really was a different time in film when this came out, and maybe the feature of Amish in a high profile film, drove this to success. There's also a certain quality to the film making itself, but I don't think it adds that much to film history.
