 Rebel Without a Cause
Rebel Without a Cause Quote: Rebel Without a Cause is a 1955 American drama film about emotionally confused suburban, middle-class teenagers. Directed by Nicholas Ray, it offered both social commentary and an alternative to previous films depicting delinquents in urban slum environments. Over the years, the film has achieved landmark status for the acting of cultural icon James Dean (who died before the film's release) in his most celebrated role. In 1990, Rebel Without a Cause was added to the preserved films of the United States Library of Congress's National Film Registry as being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
The story of a rebellious teenager who arrives at a new high school, meets a girl, disobeys his parents, and defies the local school bullies was a groundbreaking attempt to portray the moral decay of American youth, critique parental style, and explore the differences and conflicts between generations. The title was adopted from psychiatrist Robert M. Lindner's 1944 book, Rebel Without a Cause: The Hypnoanalysis of a Criminal Psychopath. The film itself, however, does not reference Lindner's book in any way.
Warner Bros. released the film on October 27, 1955, less than one month after Dean's fatal car crash.

 Re: Rebel Without a Cause
How James Dean got nominated for East of Eden instead of this, I'll never know. It's truly one of the great performances.
Luckily, it's not a case of an actor elevating a work; indeed, he doesn't even steal the movie. Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo are just as good. The film itself is a blisteringly powerful melodrama; Ray is almost like Sirk played straight. That moment with Dean trapped between his parents, as the camera violently shifts back and forth, is pure cinema.
It's also a pretty interesting look at the nuclear family life of the 50s; not just in the various households, but in the Jim/Judy/Plato triangle that develops. It is, at once, both a heartbreaking love triangle (Plato's homosexuality not only suggested but intended) and a perversion of the traditional mother/father/child hierarchy. Plato looks up to Jim as both a father figure and a symbol of romantic longing. This confusion between father and lover, echoed in all the households, is perhaps the film's most controversial message.
Brilliant stuff.

I'll have to watch it again to really capture everything that happened but this was indeed brilliant stuff. Dean, Wood, and Mineo are all just fantastic here.

 Re: Rebel Without a Cause
I don't really get what made this get the status of iconic film, maybe the depiction of rebellious teenagers was interesting, on top of it starring the suave Dean soon after his death boosting it I guess. But the film isn't a standout for me at all. Dean is a good actor, but he seems far beyond his years to play a teenager, it has imposter vibes. But he is a cool cat and there are some sparking moments in this, it's just that watching the emotions of moody teenagers is not my cup of tea.
