Quote:
The Car is a 1977 thriller/horror film directed by Elliot Silverstein and written by Michael Butler, Dennis Shryack and Lane Slate. The film stars James Brolin, Kathleen Lloyd, John Marley, and Ronny Cox, and tells the story of a mysterious car which goes on a murderous rampage, terrorizing the residents of a small town.

The movie was produced and distributed by Universal Studios, and was influenced by numerous "road movies" of the 1970s including Steven Spielberg's 1971 thriller Duel and Roger Corman's Death Race 2000.

There is something about 70s horror films that holds an attraction. Maybe its because they don't wink at you and take themself's deadly serious that serves to heighten the tension, and The Car is a definate 70s product in point.

Looking back yes its rather hokey and silly but its also damned unsettling to boot. It doesn't bother with any real explinations of how or where this "Devil Car" came from, it just appears, starts mowing people down with impunity and thats pretty much it. Its not terribly subtle either, the Car is a big black monstrousity and alot of the scares are well telegraphed (plus the sky seems to be painted a blood red at points) but hey just because you're expecting something doesn't lower the impact.

Just found out its on DVD and bought a copy, looking forward to watching it again. (noticed its up on youtube as well but I'd rather a TV watch)
