Quote:
Rambo III is a 1988 American action thriller film directed by Peter MacDonald and co-written by Sylvester Stallone, who also reprises his role as Vietnam War veteran John Rambo. A sequel to First Blood (1982), Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985) and the third installment in the Rambo franchise, making it the last film to feature Richard Crenna as Colonel Sam Trautman before his death in 2003. It was followed by Rambo (2008) and Rambo: Last Blood (2019).

The film depicts fictional events during the Soviet–Afghan War. In the film, Rambo sets out on a dangerous journey to Afghanistan in order to rescue his former military commander and his longtime best friend Col. Trautman from the hands of an extremely powerful and ruthless Soviet Army colonel who is bent on killing both Trautman and Rambo, and to conquer Afghanistan for the Soviet armed forces.

Sixty-five seconds of the film were cut in the United Kingdom version for theatrical release. Some later video releases almost tripled the cuts.[6] Rambo III was released worldwide on May 25, 1988, and grossed $189 million at the box office. With a production budget of between $58 and $63 million, Rambo III was the most expensive film ever made at the time, before being beaten by 1989's Back to the Future Part II.

That's the comical side of Rambo, which is still very mellow and in-line with the bitter and dark character of the previous films.

Rambo III - A+

Brilliant action, and the character stays consistent. His muscles and facial expressions are integral to the role, he is the quintessential male role model.

The action is good, Stallone knows the Rambo character well, as does the Colonel, and its certainly interesting to see Rambo is on the side of rebel fighters that would eventually turn to terrorists themselves.

Overall it does go overboard at times, much like Rocky IV, Over the top and other Stallone vehicles of the time, like the silly horse riding game, the beginning, and the ending, but there is some good stuff throughout and it remains entertaining as an 80s relic.

B-/B, heres hoping Rambo shits on it.

Thegun, I think you are biased towards movies of "older" action stars like Arnie, Sly and so on no matter how good/bad they are :D

Theres certainly enough of their movies I'm not too fond of.

I hated Over the Top and Cobra, and not a fan of Red Heat, Raw Deal, Red Sonja, Conan the Destroyer.

I'll admit I love Schwarzenegger, Ford, Willis, and Stallone, but that doesnt mean that there movies arent great, and even some of their weaker efforts, than can at least rise above it. And I guess my grading scale is one of the hardest ones to look at. I rarely give Ds or F's , so if I give a B, thats usually not a good sign. Mine would be best to keep as A+ (A life changing film) A (Very good and rewatchable) A- (Lots of good stuff in here) B+ (Not everything is there, but it's a solid effort) B/B- (Not all I hoped for) Cs are just very average for me, and for a D and F it usually needs to be laughable bad, or just terrible.

C

I like the Rambo films on a story level way more than on an action level. With that in mind, I like Rambo III a tad better than Rambo: First Blood Part II.

In that case, you are just a very forgiving grader. And I suppose that says a lot coming from me, heh.

I haven't seen the second one, but this one really sucks. I laughed how it was dedicated to "the gallant people of Afghanistan".

Rambo III

Just finished watching this again. There is no film that makes me happier than Rambo III. I'm contemplating moving it up to #1 on my all-time list. It's perfection really. The wonderful score by Jerry Goldsmith, the beautiful scenery and physical prowess of Stallone are second to none. The film doesn't take any more liberties than movies take nowadays. The action is tense, exciting and there's a pay-off in each scene. The opening fight alone makes this one of the best movies ever made - the music parallels the fight's path to the end resulting in a wonderfully suspense atmosphere.

The film also offers a message about the Afghan people and, in particular the Mujahideen rebels, and it's still relevant today with the US trying to compete against it, which is ironic now. The little boy, Hamid, is a nice touch and elicits some caring emotion from Rambo. It really is a wonderful movie. Peter MacDonald is a fantastic director, and he should be much more highly regarded in the action movie world for he has directed great pictures like this one and Legionnaire, and to a lesser degree as 2nd unit director; three of the Harry Potter movies and The Empire Strikes Back - I dislike them, but some people love them. Yet his name is relatively unknown. It's a damn shame.

A+

My problem with Rambo II-IV has always been that Rambo just dispatches the bad guys so easily. Barely a real struggle.

He gets captured and tortured in Rambo: First Blood Part II. He has a failed rescue attempt in Rambo III as well as shrapnel through his waist. In Rambo, he's aided by a jeep-mounted .50-caliber machine gun, there's not too much that the bad guys can do about that.

He is still an unstoppable machine all the way through, even the injuries don't seem to bother him much and there is never a worthy opponent.

D

I remember liking Rambo III better when I was a kid. Revisiting this in the "Rambo Collection" just has a bland feel to it. To me - this installment, more than any other, seems Rambo kills the enemy effortlessly.

Riiiight, you wanted realism. :funny:

Funny how nobody ever complains about this in Commando, Predator, Raw Deal, True Lies etc..

No, not realism at all, just better enemies. Predator is a pretty badass enemy in, um, Predator.

Ok, so your criticism is better enemies. The movies are called Rambo: First Blood Part II, Rambo III and simply, Rambo. Is there any problem with Rambo being the dominant character in his own movie just like the Predator is the dominant character in his own movie? Perhaps you watched it with the wrong frame of mind.

The third Rambo film is a very solid action film, one I loved as a kid, but when revisiting it again now that feeling of movie magic is hard to find. This entry just doesn't click as well, it's a bit hard to pinpoint but it's a step down on the emotions. It's still very good through its high octane action, especially the chopper action is pretty cool. It just remains enjoyable to see Rambo making his way through a mission, the desert is a different and fun setting for it too. The story is not really bad either, just the script around it could have been polished better.

B+

I still don't get why this film gets such a bad rep. I honestly enjoy it just as much as if not more than First Blood Part ll. I love the scope of this film, especially all the desert stuff with the choppers, tanks and horses. It was a different setting, but it still felt very much like a Rambo film.
