The film follows an haute bourgeoisie family through changing times and fortunes, and its disruption by the force of passion. The cast is led by Tilda Swinton as Emma Recchi. Co-producers Swinton and Guadagnino developed the movie together over an 11-year period. The film is the first for which the composer John Adams has allowed his music to be used. This deep dark melodrama plays across a time in a wealthy family's life and it alternatively captured me and repelled me. There are moments of the most supreme bliss portrayed in this film that make up for the tragic trajectory the tale takes. The unexpected appearance of languid nude scenes, which seem to have gone out of fashion, was a delightful nostalgic glimpse of the good old days in film. And of course, the icy core of the piece, Tilda Swinton. Now there is an actor of the highest degree. She is brilliant here. The movie, alas, is just very good. 4 out of 5.

The lush, perfectly crafted shots (loved the snowy city shots at the beginning). The ever-present, sweeping original score. And Swinton is top-notch. Learning Italian-accented Russian for a role? Wow. Yet...the storyline hasn't resonated with me much. Not as much as I would have hoped. And there are a few parts where it became SO melodramatic, I was almost tempted to laugh. This movie is not good. Not at all. Visually, it is goofy, and in no way a 'treat for the senses.' I have rarely seen this much meaningless symbolism in one place. _________________ k
