Post Re: Citizen Kane
Just saw it in film class. It is certainly a visual marvel as well as deep into context of life. Such as Kane had not abandoned the world, but was himself abandoned by the world when just a small boy. And from this so called plot hole, the whole film itself is a plothole. His life is told from a variety of different stories that all had different opinions of Kane. His assistent told of his lively entertaining years for he felt fondly of him. His friend's "drunk" perspective of being fired brought Kane into looking more as a villian and a cold man with ruthlessness, and his ex wife looks to him as inhuman, and Kane is reflected on it. All three sections of his life reflect how his storytellers thought of him. Because of this, we will never know the true story of Citizen Kane, which is the way it is with many people of that nature. The News reel of his life was the closest accurrate portrayal of how this man might have lived.

What's left is decent to great acting, amazing cinematography, and a never clear actual plotline. Whether its what Welles planned on or not is inconsequential. The movie is awesome, but does have its flaws as well. Because of this brilliant technique of storytelling. You never feel really satisfied in the end.

Solid A though and probably one of best films of the pre 1950 cinema.

I don't really like it, to me it is like GWTW.

A great old film that today is not that great.

However, I do love Casablanca with a passion even though it is just a typical love story....

Rhett is even more pimpin in the book too, he's much more hard and bad-ass. That's one of the problems I had with GWTW the movie, they turned it into much more of a huge gushy romance, whereas the book was kind of an fuck you to the whole forever and ever thing. By the end Rhett tells her she's a silly bitch and everytime she tells herself that she actually loves Ashley or him, she's just making infatuations seem bigger than they are, she's too shallow to actually feel any of that stuff.

Yeah, even though I gave the movie a B, I think I'd rate this pretty high on most overrated films...

The innovation in this film alone is enough to get it an A in my book.

well imo the only not overrated highly rated film is...

well...

none

Once a film reaches a high status of being a an "all time classic", there is always someone out there who finds the film overrated.

a citizen kane review thread is stupid because you're either repeating what has been said countless times before or are stupid.

Supremely overrated. Technically brilliant, with its use of extremely low camera angles and chiaroscuro lighting. A great performance by Welles drives the piece. But that's about all it's got. The story is far from compelling and I never felt involved in the character's tale. The use of flashbacks doesn't paint a very interesting or complete picture of Kane, as there is far too much devoted to overlong anecdotes and not enough to the overall story. The Rosebud twist is a nice way to end the film, but I can't judge how surprising or shocking it was, as I had been spoiled long ago. Oh, and way too long, even at only two hours. It just drags on and on. I can see why it's a technical masterpiece, but other that that, it's nothing special.

I still don't like it that much.

Why the uncalled-for mocking, though?

Also, you just made a thread celebrating TDK passing one billion dollars. You have no right to talk.

We're at the shrine of the master - - we're here to worship the glory that is Citizen Kane!

Please keep your petty squabbles to yourself and show some respect, or at least bow in silence...

A little harsher than I think, but about right. I think there are a few good side performances and the story has a little meat but it is a very very very long bore. Movies that are considerably longer than this (ROTK, AAE, Schindler's list) feel about 1/10th as long as this does. It's not bad by an means, but not particularly enjoyable.

Exactly. If they don't know how to behave, and feel OK offending others, they get their ass kicked, so they'll think next time before opening their rotten mouths.
