Quote:
Great Expectations is a 1998 contemporary film adaptation of the Charles Dickens novel of the same name, directed by Alfonso CuarĂ³n and starring Ethan Hawke, Gwyneth Paltrow, Robert De Niro, Anne Bancroft and Chris Cooper. It is known for having moved the setting of the original novel from 1861 London to 1990s New York. The hero's name has also been changed from Pip to Finn, and the character Miss Havisham has been renamed Nora Dinsmoor. Despite its popular and respected cast of actors, the movie received mixed reviews.

Very soild A. I found this to be an even greater work of art than Children of Men and Y Tu Mama Tambien. If people can judge this movie on its own and divorce their great expectations of a strict adaptation of Charles Dicken's primary source (Children of Men took even more liberties from its novel than this), they will find one of the most artistically beautiful and romantic cinematic masterpieces on film.

A great film. Gorgeous cinematography, great direction, and solid performances make this one worth seeing.

If the script had matched the brilliant visual style of this film, this would be a masterpiece. I know I shouldn't love it as much as I do, but...

Visually stunning. The score is beautiful...I own the CD. Outside of that, though, the movie is pretty stinky.

Unfortunately, yes.

But the score and visuals make it very memorable, imo.

Score and visuals are nice, but when everything depicted within is so dopey I just can't roll with it. Give me the David Lean version anytime.

And what was with the bizarre name changes? Pip bcomes Finn? Miss Havisham becomes Miss Dinsmore? The hell?
