 Matchstick Men
Matchstick Men Quote: Matchstick Men is a 2003 American drama film directed by Ridley Scott. Based on Eric Garcia's novel Matchstick Men: A Novel about Grifters with Issues (2002), the motion picture stars Nicolas Cage, Sam Rockwell, and Alison Lohman. I was dissapointed. Ridley Scott is one of my favorite directors, but this movie just didn't quite get to me as much as I would have hoped. Also, Nicolas Cage is one of my favorite actors, so I was surprised that I didn't love it. It wasn't horrible, but definently dissapointing. C-

I agree. One of RS's greatest disappointments. I didn't enjoy it at all.

Not one of Ridley Scott's best, but a decent movie. Nicolas Cage is good and I don't even like Cage. Alison Lohman continues to develop into one of the most promising leading ladies of the future. I grade it a B.

A movie that could have been much better with an better ending. It somehow ruined the movie for me. Still very good before. B+

The movie is actually much better than many say it is. Nicholas Cage was great and so was Sam Rockwell, I liked the story and the twist worked for me.

A terrific movie with solid performances. Not only was it entertaining, it had half a brain, which says quite a few things. A-

(My original review from Sept. 2003:)
Matchstick Men: The Pro's of Con!
A conman movie! We haven't had a good one since Nine Queens a couple of years back - and this is a great one. We don't have enough movies in this genre, nor the time travel genre - (What I'd really like to see is a conman time travel movie!) Anyway, I was pleasantly conned by the story which put me in mind of the experience of The Usual Suspects I had way back when. I know that Nicholas Cage gets on some people's nerves, but to me he did yet another superb job of acting here, and Sam Rockwell and Alison Lohman provided admirable support. Nice to see a quality screenplay for a change, and it's great to be out of the late summer movie doldrums finally.
7 out of 5.

I love this little movie. One of my favorite Nicholas Cage movies, plus the rest of the cast works very well. The story is interesting and the characters are intriguing. I love the part where the lady is all like "I WANT that" whisper when she sees the pirate ship model ole Nick is conning them for.

 Re: Matchstick Men
So... I finally saw this.
Loved it. I don't think I've seen Alison Lohman in anything since Big Fish. I hope to see more of her, she's great here, as is Cage. A-.

 Re: Matchstick Men
The movie's big set-up is obvious from frame one, which makes all the sub-Paper Moon shenanigans really hard to sludge through.
Also, if you think two hours of Nicholas Cage and Ridley Scott indulging in their worst instincts sounds like a nightmare, well, you'd be right.

 Re: Matchstick Men
This was a great movie until the twist ending, which pissed me off to no end. I rarely get so mad over a movie. The ending just ruined it, IMO. I'd give the movie a B because it was so wonderful prior to the ending. I've only watched this one once though (I did purchase it) and now that I know what to expect it might not bother me as much if I watched it again.
