Quote:
Pitch Black (also known as The Chronicles of Riddick: Pitch Black) is a 2000 science fiction thriller film directed by David Twohy and is recognized as the acting breakthrough of Vin Diesel.

In the film, dangerous criminal Richard B. Riddick (Vin Diesel) is being transported to prison in a cargo spacecraft. When the spaceship is damaged by comet debris and makes an emergency crash landing on an empty desert planet, Riddick escapes. However, when predatory flying alien creatures begin attacking the survivors, Riddick joins forces with the crew to develop a plan to escape the planet.

The film's total budget was estimated to be US$23 million. It was a sleeper hit, grossing over US$53 million worldwide. It has since developed its own cult following, particularly around the antihero Riddick. A sequel, The Chronicles of Riddick, was released in 2004.

Pitch Black is nothing special, but it's still an enjoyable film to watch if you ever have time.

It's much better than Chronicles of Riddick, so if you only saw Riddick, don't let that stop you from seeing Pitch Black.

Vin Diesel's only good movie (Saving Private Ryan doesn't count). It's a bit of an Alien rip-off, but still very entertaining. The ending is a bit of a downer, but it makes the movie better actually. I rate it a B+.

Saving Private Ryan and The Iron Giant?

OKAY you probably mean starring roles. ;)

Pitch Black is a good little thriller, I guess. It's like an episode of Star Trek gone awry. But I've never been able to understand the obsession regarding the movie. I think it looks really cheap, like a Sci-Fi Channel movie of the week.

Sadly, the most interesting thing about it was the planet's cycle, and that was revisited in many ways in Chronicles of Riddick.

Totally agreed. What a piece of shit this film is, and Vin is so bland and talentless.

To date this is the best movie Vin Diesel had a leading role in. It was somewhat better than The Chronicles of Riddick and much better than The Fast and the Furious and that xXx crap. I agree that it was somewhat of an alien rip-off, but I do feel that it created a great atmosphere and had some really nice style to it as well. Moreover, no movie has ever managed to display Vin Diesel's charisma as this one did. I really bought his anti-hero in this one, much rather than in TFTF or xXx. Parts of the movie are very suspenseful, even though sometimes you have to wonder why certain film characters are so stupid.

I'd give it an A-. Some really strong performances, a damn gripping (and clever) plot, not to mention the fact that it's a creature feature, easily my favorite guilty pleasure genre. This is the movie that introduced me to Vin Diesel, and for my money his performance in this is one of the coolest, most charismatic to come out of Hollywood in the past five years.

A nice twist on the Alien formula, with a surprisingly good script and a great performance by Vin Diesel. Riddick is one of the most likable anti-heroes in recent memory, and in this film he's given equal doses of hero and villain. The exposition is nearly perfect, introducing all the characters very well and setting up the story adequately. It moves a little too fast after that, though, bypassing a lot of the story in favour of quick kills. Still, the visuals are solid and the direction is quite innovative - I liked the high contrast showing how bright it was on the planet. Diesel carries the movie, but Radha Mitchell is pretty solid opposite him. Some pretty nice gore scenes too. Just a pretty good creature feature.

The arresting washed out imagery, Diesel's amazing physicality, and a story that aims for pure old school horror that doesn't bother with explanations (one of horrors worst enemies in my mind) all combine to make this one of the best sci-fi set movies of the past 10 years.

It really is the lean structure that does it for me, far to many sci-fi movies get bogged down in the niggly bits, feeling they need to add logic to fantasy which at the end of the day is what virtually all sci-fi movies are in essence. This movie throws off the flab and just goes for the throat and I love it for that.

A+
