 Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room Quote: Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room is a 2005 documentary film based on the best-selling 2003 book of the same name by Fortune reporters Bethany McLean and Peter Elkind, a study of one of the largest business scandals in American history. McLean and Elkind are credited as writers of the film alongside the director, Alex Gibney.
The film examines the 2001 collapse of the Enron Corporation, which resulted in criminal trials for several of the company's top executives; it also shows the involvement of the Enron traders in the California electricity crisis. The film features interviews with McLean and Elkind, as well as former Enron executives and employees, stock analysts, reporters and the former Governor of California Gray Davis.
The film won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Documentary Feature and was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 78th Academy Awards in 2006.

A very smart, organized and entertaining doc. It doesn't have much of a thesis in terms of society or capitalism, it just pretty much deals with the scandal itself. I really enjoyed it.

"Burn, Baby, Burn!" This documentary endeavors to lay out the sordid tale of a corporation's ruin. It is a very clearly told tale that was never clearly laid out like this in the media. Why? Probably because the media is just another tottering amoral corporate brother in arms. The fact that the director, Alex Gibney, can make a criminal accounting scam into a highly entertaining two hour movie is a credit to both his skill and to the universality of the underlying corporate ethics. Forget terrorism - this is what you should be scared of...

A sobering look at the worst excesses of corporate greed Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, rips along at such a pace that it feels almost unreal at points. Its so hard to comprehend the web of deceit and lies that this story contains but damn if it isn't fascinating.
A great template on how to make a documentary that is equally informative and entertaining, I'll just remember to avoid putting my pension in stocks after this.
