 Siu lam juk kau [Shaolin Soccer] Shaolin Soccer Quote: Shaolin Soccer is a 2001 Hong Kong comedy film co-written, directed by and starring Stephen Chow. A former Shaolin monk reunites his five brothers, years after their master's death, to apply their superhuman martial arts skills to play soccer and bring Shaolin kung fu to the masses.
In 2008 a sequel, produced by, but not starring Stephen Chow, was released entitled Shaolin Girl. Very few of the cast from the original film made an appearance. Highly overrated. C

Wow, kind of a dissapointment after seeing the infinitely better Kung-Fu Hustle. This is like an infinitely worse version of that movie. It's still fun, but weird and I didn't entirely get it. B-

It's fun and Stephen Chow is a gifted comedian. I have only seen the shortened version of the film, though and it certainly felt like something was missing. The football scenes themselves disappointed me, but there are enoug good laughs inbetween and visually it's good as well. Overall, certainly not on par with Chow's best, Kung Fu Hustle, but it is in the same league as From Beijing with Love. So far I ave yet to see a single unfunny Chow film....good job.

The cinematic equivalent of an acid trip. I didn't know what the hell to make of the lunacy I was watching. A squad actually called Team Evil? A shot so powerful it rips the goalkeepers clothes off?
I've known Python sketchs that were less insane
B (for the ludo bits, everything else was filler)

This was SUCH a hilarious physical comedy. Each stunt kept getting more and more over the top, and I loved it!

Saw Shaolin Soccer last night at the theatre in it's miniscule theatrical run in repertory theatres. It is a very funny slapstick underdog sports movie. My Chinese advisors tell me the director/star Stephen Chow is known for his "stupid comedies" in Hong Kong - perhaps he is the Chinese Rob Schneider? Anyways, the movie includes lots of funny FX for the kung-fu aspects of the soccer, and even throws in quite a convincing romantic story. Lots of cultural specific jokes that didn't come across in the subtitle's translations. It's a shame that Miramax dumped a wider release for this one - it's a good one!
