Quote:
Clerks is a 1994 independent comedy film written and directed by Kevin Smith, who also appears in the film as Silent Bob. Starring Brian O'Halloran as Dante Hicks and Jeff Anderson as Randal Graves, it presents a day in the lives of two store clerks and their acquaintances. Clerks was the first of Smith's View Askewniverse films. It introduces several characters, notably Jay and Silent Bob, who reappear in his later works.

Clerks, which had been shot for US$27,575 in the convenience store where director Kevin Smith worked in real life, grossed over US$3 million in theaters, launching Smith's career.

It's pretty damn funny.

But, in all honesty, I like Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back just a little better.

Baaaaaaaarrrffff.

Clerks was gut-busting hilarious in 1994 and remains the same way in 2006.

B+

It's a great movie, but no classic. I had a good time watching it, and the actors do a great job for such an indie project, I can see how this defines Smith in a way. But it falls a bit behind say Chasing Amy by the way the character work is just ordinary, they're not fleshed out or all that believable. Also, Smith has diven into funnier and deeper waters with his dialogue, nothing they said really struck me in any way.

Still liked it a lot though.

A pretty damn funny movie. My grade for it stands at an A- or a B+, I'm not quite sure which.

Fairly amusing, but that's about all it has going for it. The dialogue is frequently witty and occasionally laugh-out-loud funny, but the film looks so cheap and the actors are so unappealing that it ruins it a bit. The black and white does absolutely nothing for the style of the film - clearly used because it was cheaper - and the story is inane and uninteresting. Still, it's pretty funny, if only for the banter between the characters. Nowhere near a comedy classic, but at least entertaining.
