Quote:
Little Miss Sunshine is a 2006 American comedy-drama film. The road movie plot follows a family's trip to a children's beauty pageant.

Little Miss Sunshine was the directorial film debut of the husband-wife team of Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris. The screenplay was written by first-time writer Michael Arndt. The movie stars Greg Kinnear, Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Paul Dano, Abigail Breslin, and Alan Arkin, and was produced by Big Beach Films on a budget of US$8 million. Filming began on June 6, 2005 and took place over 30 days in Arizona and Southern California.

The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 20, 2006, and its distribution rights were bought by Fox Searchlight Pictures for one of the biggest deals made in the history of the festival. The film had a limited release in the United States on July 26, 2006, and later expanded to a wider release starting on August 18.

Little Miss Sunshine received critical acclaim and had an international box office gross of $100.5 million. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won two: Best Original Screenplay for Michael Arndt and Best Supporting Actor for Alan Arkin. It also won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Feature and received numerous other accolades.

A-, or best of the year so far. Little Miss Sunshine is a very fun and entertaining movie that appeals to anyone. The essemble acting (including several delightful, unexpected cameos) is absolutely top-notch. The cast all had their own individual moments to shine throughout the film with no weak performance from anyone.

Also, the movie is very original and pushes stereotypical characters in surprising directions. The daring script is a lock for an Oscar nomination, and hopefully will get the win. While there were someshockingly dark comedic situations that could border on being tasteless, the movie has so much heart that we can overlook past the possibly offensive moments. A definite recommend if you like movies such as Sideways or Meet the Parents/Fockers.

The best movie of the year so far easily and possibly the best dysfunctional family drama as well. Hugely enjoyable, humorous, insightful, poignant and moving. The script, the acting, the direction, everything is just...nearly perfect.

A

Also, see my main site review for more gushing on my part.

Great movie. Acting was strong from all of the cast and there were some moments that had me crying with laughter, and then some other very touching moments. The crowd reaction was huge. Anything remotely funny they ate it up and got great applause at the end.

I wanted to hug myself during this movie. Movies as skillful as Little Miss Sunshine do not come along too often, unfortunately. For a movie dealing with (at different points) death, drug addiction, suicide and family dysfunction, Little Miss Sunshine is surprisingly feel-good and sweet. Honestly, it feels impossible to not be smiling as the credits start rolling. The acting from a talented ensemble cast is wonderful. Greg Kinnear and Toni Collette have no problems as the Hooper parents, with Kinnear perfectly displaying an emotionally disconnected father and Collette as the mother just trying to hold her family together. Alan Arkin and Steve Carell are both smashing and steal their share of scenes, with Carell proving surprisingly effective at playing it straight; Paul Dano does quite well with an antisocial, "mute" teenager. As Olive, Abigail Breslin delivers one of the best child performances in a long time. There is no sickening cuteness or overacting, with Breslin obviously understanding her character and the humor of the film. Overall, Little Miss Sunshine ends up being a perfect title, because most viewers will indeed feel quite sunny when the film is over. A

"Melanchomedy"

...I felt so darn inspired by the movie tonight, that I had to invent a whole new freakin' word for it.

Yeah, uh-huh, you guessed it... I fell hard for Little Miss Sunshine!!!

Outstanding piece of writing, this screenplay. Perfect acting. Beautiful direction.

I out-and-out loved it.

8 out of 5.

(No matter which movies I've promised a 2006 top ten list spot to, none of 'em are bumping Little Miss Sunshine - a gem among minerals...)

saw it today, it was so i don't even know how to describe it. it hit me in all the right places, the cast was amazing, i think pauld dano stole all the scenes he was in, at tiems i wasn't sure whether or not to laugh or if i was supposed to be sad or what, everything just fit, and there were moments of pure hilarity. great great film. Abigail Breslin did such an amazing job in the last scene i was dying.

I saw it today, as I mentioned earlier.

This is the best movie I have seen this year. Great performances, great script, and great LOL moments. The Superfreak Dance sequence is probably the funniest scene of all the movies I've seen this year. This a must see for anyone.

Grade: A

Also, I especially like the end since it doesn't go into the obvious cutesy territory.

Enough homework to take up all of Sunday? That stinks.

Saw it tonight. Wow. What a film!

Abigail Breslin, Olive, was so DAMN CUTE! She played the role to a tee and NAILED every second of it!!! ESPECIALLY the superfreak dance... which was far and away one of the funniest sequences I have ever seen.

Greg Kinnear played his role great! As did Toni Collette

Steve Carrell was EXCELLENT in his semi-serious role.

But Paul Dano stole the show for me! He was wonderful in every scene. And was also the biggest part of the most powerful scene in the movie... I was in tears.

A+, easily in my Top 3 of the year.

This is easily one of the best of the year so far. I really hope Alan arkin gets an oscar nod for this, he and the rest of the cast were just awesome.

10/10

Not the well-written masterpiece for which I was hoping (I ultimately found its poignancy a bit slight), but I liked a lot of it, loved some of it, and probably haven't laughed harder at a film this year.
