 You, Me and Dupree
You, Me and Dupree Quote: You, Me and Dupree is a 2006 romantic comedy film directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, written by Mike LeSieur, and produced by Mary Parent, Scott Stuber, and Owen Wilson.
The film revolves around newlyweds Carl and Molly Peterson (Matt Dillon and Kate Hudson). After Carl's best man and friend Randolph Dupree (Owen Wilson), loses his job and apartment, the couple allow him to move in but Dupree inevitably overstays his welcome.

I went into this movie with about no hopes, and I left disapointed(Is that even possible...). The only good thing was that I got paid to watch it. All of the funny scenes are in the trailer except one scene towards the end with the security guard Paco and Dupree. After that it is slim pickens. Seth Rogan is wasted in this movie. He steals every scene he is in but you can count on one hand how many scenes he is in. Pretty boring "comedy" if you want to call it that. D

An absolutely terrible attempt at comedy. I won't even do it the justice of writing a full review. Suffice to say, everything about this film is awful. The story is inane, the acting is terrible, the humour is forced, and the characters are annoying. Owen Wilson is quickly proving that he's the most unfunny of the Frat Pack bunch - he's completely lost here without Vince Vaughn or Ben Stiller to support him. Matt Dillon & Kate Hudson are phoning it in, and Michael Douglas terribly overacts - he's obviously just picking up a paycheck here. The story goes from mildly amusing to just plain bad in no time at all, and the laughs are few and far between. I'm just glad I didn't have to pay for it. Truly awful.

I went in with high expectations because I love both Kate Hudson & Matt Dillon... but I must say that I was disappointed. It started off okay but quickly took a nose dive. There were laughs here and there, but there were long lapses of time in between them both. Owen Wilson doesn't ever do anything for me, but I was hoping maybe this movie would change it.. it didn't. He's unfunny and tries too hard. His character wasn't at all believable either. I found it extremely hard to believe that someone like Dupree would be "in love" with Mandy after just one date -- in love to the point of calling her every night and leaving her messages, writing love poems about her, etc. It felt unsincere and kind of made me dislike the character. I liked the turnaround in the end, however, when he tried to reunite Carl and Molly. Kate Hudson was adorable as always, and I actually liked the pairing between her & Matt Dillon. I think the movie would have worked a whole lot better if they didn't try to make it so much about Dupree and focused more on their relationship. Overall, I didn't think it was exactly terrible, but I definately think the story could have been improved on.

Yow!
An unexpectedly brilliant comic screenplay and note-perfect performances by the four* leads catapult You, Me, and Dupree onto my 2006 top ten list!
I'm shocked. I didn't read them, but I saw the trend of the reviews and my expectations were way, way down. But I suppose I'm not surprised - if you're not over 35 and haven't experienced marriage (directly or indirectly), then you may have trouble relating to a lot of the humor in this new comedy classic. That's okay. It'll be still there waitin' for you on DVD in the future, when you're ready for it. The only thing I feel sad about, is that you couldn't have seen it with the perfect audience I saw it with tonight - everyone was in just the right mood and the laughter infected the crowd. I guarantee that the people I saw this with tonight will become the very definition of WOM.
I've said it before, I'll say it again -- the very best way to see a comedy movie is with a lively audience on opening night.
7 out of 5.
(Note: Post credits bonus scene alert! ...and unlike POTC2 - this time it's worth it!)
((* I didn't even hear a hint of who would play Kate Hudson's character's father - but it was perfectomundo casting...))

I strongly disagree -- Ben Stiller or Vince Vaughn would have been entirely wrong for the part -- only Matt Dillon could have played that role in this screenplay - he was perfect for it...

I'm not talking about this role in the movie, I'm speaking in general. Wilson's only been funny when he's been opposite a funnier star. And Dillon was the straight man in this movie, so Wilson faltered as a result.
Incidentally, why am I not surprised that you liked this movie?

Probably the very defintion of a "meh" film. It's not like it's some atrocious crime against humanity or anything, it's just very by the numbers and kind of stale. There are some brief moments of humor, but they are too few and far between to recommend this as an actual comedy. The performances are all okay, with it feeling like the entire cast is phoning it in the majority of the time. It also feels like it was cut to ribbons in order to obtain a PG13 rating, which is pretty obnoxious.
So yeah... harmless Hollywoodized fluff that's funny occassionally.

Well I liked it a lot. I thought that it not being all slapstick and poop jokes like what the trailer was pointing to actually worked in it's favour, it did in a good job making it's characters all with their own ambitions, feelings, and so on. I wasn't knee-slapping funny, but I don't think it was supposed to be. Not every Frat Pack movie has to be Wedding Crashers guys.
While this is overall a much lesser movie than that example, I thought that this used it's frames in ways that one didn't. It's comedy was more ensemble centered, in that it worked off the interactions between the characters rather than one man making all the jokes, we don't see a threesome of comedy in that many movies nowadays, where the balance of focus is placed on all 3 evenly and they're all feeding off each other. There was also a sense of sweetness and good nature to the film that I thought grounded it really well, the feelings of comradery between the leads and the questions of that father in law subplot.
So in final, is it one of the funnier movies of the year? Of course not. But it's an enjoyable watch, and it's heart is in the right place. I still recommend it, despite all the other comments here.

By the way, it isn't like the movie didn't have laughs. I liked the "Poetry? What a homo." line a lot, and the scene where Hudson was pointing out who Mandy had slept with was good, among others. I had a smile on my face the entire time, really.

It was very funny and I enjoyed it a lot.
My only problem with the film was that the marketing made it seem like the whole "Dupree moving in and being annoying" was the main part of the story, when it felt like more of a side story. But otherwise, very good.

Then what is the main story? Because yeah that is how they are marketing it.

B Then what is the main story? Because yeah that is how they are marketing it. Well... He moved in. He annoyed. He was kicked out within 30 minutes of the film. Then, after he's brought back in when he has no where else to go, Matt Dillon becomes jealous and thinks that Dupree and Molly (his wife) like each other, Molly's father-in-law (Michael Douglas) hates Matt Dillon, wants the marriage to end and spends the whole film terrorizing him, his marriage being on the rocks after just a week, and other things like that. The whole story is really all about Matt Dillon's life after being married. And yes, someone spoil what happened after the credits.

After the credits...
Lance Armstrong is reading Owen Wilson's book and repeating "Lance-ness" over and over.
Not funny, and not worth it.

Not funny, and not worth it. Ugh. I thought it would be something Mandy-related.

You never even see Mandys face. I have no clue why they did it like that, I was thinking maybe they'd show her at the very end as a famous actress in a cameo, but I guess not.

Yeah I would think the same thing too. Did they forget to add a payoff or what?
Also? WTF happened to the Amanda Detmer character, Annie, Neil's wife? I know her scenes were probably cut... but still... she was like the 5th billed character. YOu only ended up hearing her screaming voice and running in the background hiding from Carl (which took what, 2 minutes?). You'd think she'll have at least a bigger scene where you actually see her interacting with other people.

As I said, this film felt cut to ribbons. The Mandy character and Neil's wife were just two instances of this. Also, most of the "risque" humor bits were terribly edited, with lots of jump cuts and whatnot. You could tell this one definitely had some extensive scissor work done. It'll be interesting if there is an "unrated" DVD, and how much longer it'll be.

Definitley. While I liked it this way, I wonder what could've been done if they'd given the movie an R rating and went for all their jokes. Really I think for an adult-ish Frat Pack movie like this, if they wanted the best chance of making it a hit, R would've been the way to go. The storyline in this one would be pretty set up for that too, it almost seemed like they originally planned to do it that way, but then changed their game plan to make it friendlier and sentimental, using a lot of the jokes but doing them in a toned down matter.
