Quote:
My Big Fat Greek Wedding is a 2002 American romantic comedy film written by and starring Nia Vardalos and directed by Joel Zwick. The movie is centered on Fotoula "Toula" Portokalou (Nia Vardalos), a middle class Greek American woman who falls in love with a non-Greek upper middle class "White Anglo-Saxon Protestant" Ian Miller (John Corbett). At the 75th Academy Awards, it was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. A sleeper hit, the film grossed $241.4 million in North America, despite never reaching number one at the box office during its release (the highest-grossing film to accomplish this feat).

THE BEST MOVIE. EVER.

I'm Greek, so maybe that's why I love it so much, but whenever the film's on television, I stop and watch it, even though I own it on DVD, and every time, I can't help but laugh at all the zany, quirky Greek traditions (some of which are actual Greek customs...others not so much). Anyway, Vardalos is not only charming and sexy, but she's a brilliant writer (yes, I LOVED MLIR and MBFGW, and yes, I liked C&C and IHVD), IMHO. This film is perfect.

Grade: A+

Currently my #1 film of all-time, ahead of Chicago, Vertigo, Super Size Me, and North by Northwest (the rest of my top 5).

DIAF.
Fucking everything that is wrong with romantic comedies, and ironically, these are crimes committed by an INDIE romcom. FML.

What a dreadful bit of cut-rate schlock this one was. I found the writing in My Big Fat Greek Wedding to be too obvious and the character transitions too abrupt (especially Tula's). The culture clash jokes are certainly based on true stereotypes but the ham-handed writing removes any subtlety leaving just single entendres in most cases.

A comment was made in the Star Wars prediction thread and listed this as a movie that received better legs at the theater than it deserved. I saw this 3 times in the theater, and after defending it decided to pop it in and watch it for the first time in a few years. I found myself laughing out loud several times during the movie, confirming my impression of it. It is a very fun fish out of water movie with likable leads with good chemistry. Aside from the two leads, Michael Constantine also shines as Toula's father. It's hard to find a comedy this funny that has a PG rating and not geared toward kids. It's kind of refreshing in that sense. This movie absolutely deserved the legs it had at the box office, and in my opinion is the most amazing box office run I've witnessed. It grossed 241M at the domestic box office, while playing in theaters for a full year and never having a 3 day weekend over 12M. That's amazing.

This is pretty good, though the second half felt a bit rushed. Very funny and relatable.
