It's hard to miss anything in such a slow movie, so no I didn't not misunderstood it or overlooked the subtle brilliance of it (because it doesn't have one). The last scene is indeed brilliant but it doesn't pay off 1 hour and 40 minutes that came before it. Instead it only makes things worse as this could've been easily cut to 20 minutes or so and be a phenomenal short.

I really don't get all that positive response and reviews it gets. Personally these kind of movies tend to be the worst thing European cinematography can offer. Pretentious and preposterous ideas that get blown up to give them some kind of an art value.

I disagree thoroughly. I found it rather fascinating and borderline hilarious at times.

The fact that this film can make a dictionary-reading scene feel thrilling is a testament to its brilliance.
