Quote:
Fever Pitch, which was released as The Perfect Catch outside of the United States and Canada, is a 2005 Farrelly brothers romantic comedy film. It is a remake of a 1997 British film of the same name. Both films are loosely based on the Nick Hornby book of the same name, a best-selling memoir in the United Kingdom. Hornby also wrote the screenplay for the original film, but had no input for the American remake. While both the book and the original 1997 film are about soccer, this version, aimed at the US market, is about baseball. Both Fever Pitch films feature dramatic or unexpected sporting victories, the original focusing on Arsenal's last minute League title win in 1989, and the remake on Boston Red Sox's 2004 World Series. The film opened in theatres on April 8, 2005.

I was more discouraged that Jimmy Fallon was in it. Does he do a good job in the movie? Keep in mind he was my least favorite cast member on SNL the past few seasons.

Even though I liked him in Taxi, he is surprising very good here.

I'll post a longer review sometime later, but this is a great film. I wasn't doubting that when I was going (Since I am a Farrelly Brothers fan, and a huge fan of the Red Sox) but I was actually a little surprised at how much I loved this film. And what's a little more surprising is how well done the romantic comedy is in this film. The Sox, are almost an afterthought, and that's why I think it will be watchable for fans of other baseball teams.

A+

I think I heard when I was hearing the Ebert & Roeper in the background last week.

That this movie actually changed part of the movie to coincide with the Red Sox winning last year.

I hate Jimmy Fallon usually. Like I said in my review of Fever Pitch, the most surprising thing about the movie is Fallon; he's actually wonderful in this.

Somehow, the Farrelly Bros. pulled a great performance out of him. It should also be noted he's much better at the subtle comedy and lightly dramatic moments. He comes across as "trying too hard" during any of his slapstick-y moments, which there are thankfully not that many of.

Post Fever Pitch: Got Me To Third Base On The First Date!
Well, first off, I'm a sucker for romantic comedies, and they laid on the romance real nice throughout the first half of this lovable movie. The humor was equally respected by the screenwriters as well and an authentic story was actually apparent underneath the whole enterprise.

I really enjoyed Fever Pitch!

On the downside, the romance, comedy, and story seemed to be forgotten for about a half hour towards the end of the movie, but darned if the whole thing didn't seem to get itself righted by the closing credits. The baseball thing wasn't critical to me, but perhaps if your a fan, it might be a pro or con - doesn't really matter though, it was really just a symbol of individual interest's role within mutual loving relationships.

(Reviewer's Disclosure: First, I'm a huge fan of the Farrelly Brothers - ranking their great films in this order: Kingpin, Something About Mary, Stuck on You, Dumb and Dumber, Shallow Hal - their only misfire was the abysmal Me, Myself, and Irene. Second, I thought both the movie Taxi and Jimmy Fallon's part in it were severely under-rated earlier this year - if you haven't seen it because of all the bad WOM, do yourself a favor - Rent It! ...And thirdly, I never get tired of Drew Barrymore, she's my perennial cutie and sells this type of RomCom to me with barely a bat of her eyelashes.)

4 out of 5.

Seeing Drew Barrymore on Conan. She mentioned that this story was changed after it was shot - originally the story was more of the obsessed fan coming to the understanding that his team might not win.

**************************

But after the Red Sox won or as they were winning - there were major changes / reshots to cover the Red Sox win - wonder how that means they changed the guy's feeling after that happens.

IMHO, they barely changed the story - and now that you mention it, perhaps that explains the big dramatic hole in the plot in the seventh inning. The Red Sox' win was the Farrelly Brother's loss - hopefully they didn't inherit the curse of the Bambino...

Goldie, rent Kingpin if you want to know how the ending should of been done. Its a very underated Farrelly brothers movie too but I dont want to give out the spoiler to Kingpin but that the ending would of been very much like if the Red Sox lost

Some comments

- Alittle disappointing considering I really was expecting a very good movie.

- I just found Jimmy Fallon alittle grating on the nerves - remember the scene in Jaws where Quint scratches the chalk board to get everyone attention.

I actually like JF more in Taxi

******************************

- But I thought Drew Barrymore was wonderful - just charming and very likeable on the screen.

*******************************

On the movie, as I used to be a baseball fan and still like the Red Sox.

I think the movie would be great for Red Sox fans - there are so many in shots that someone who has been to Fenway would appreciate the most.

To me there were just too many shots at the baseball game - for awhile it was every other scene - it just got to be tiring.

********************************

For instance tonight I see that About a Boy is on - now that was a great romantic comedy ( too bad I have bar plans ).

Known for their trademark gross-out comedies such as THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY and ME, MYSELF & IRENE, the Farrelly Brothers have made a name for themselves by creating likable characters in unbelievably absurd situations. However, over the past few years, the two brothers have tried their best to distance themselves from the genre that made them famous. Instead, they have made softer PG-13 rated comedies thatr still make you laugh but also have real heart to them. 2001's SHALLOW HAL still offered plenty of comedy, but also had a real heart to it as well. 2003's STUCK ON YOU was a film about brotherly love between siamese twins. It also offered plenty of comedy but also gave the audience a sweet story with geniunely likable characters. Their latest film, this year's FEVER PITCH, shows how much they have changed over the past few years. For their latest film is not only the pair's best film, it's also one of the best romantic comedies in years.

The story tells the tale of a Red Sox fan named Ben. After a troublesome move to Boston leaves him with no friends, the 7-year old is taken to a baseball game with his uncle Carl at Fenway Park. Almost immediately he falls in love with the game, the atmosphere and the feel of the whole experience. Fast forward to October 2003. Ben (Jimmy Fallon) is now teaching 9th grade honors geometry and is a bigger Red Sox fan than ever. His apartment is showered with Red Sox memorobilia, from shower curtains to phones. Due to his obsession he has never been able to carry a successful relationship. However, this all changes when he meets Lindsay Meeks (Drew Barrymore), a successful business consultant, while on a field trip with some of his students. He follows his gut and asks her out. She initially rejects him, for she is used to dating guys who are just like her, but due to the advice of her friends she takes a chance and later accepts his offer. As the months pass, the two become closer and closer and it is very evident that they are falling madly in love. But then April comes, and the true extent of Ben's obsession is revealed. Initially accepting of his favorite pasttime, Lindsay accompanies him to several games (he has great season tickets that his uncle left him when he died) and is introduced to his "second family," the people that surround Ben's seats. However, as the months pass and the Red Sox get closer and closer to the playoffs, it begins to cause turmoil to their relationship. At this point Ben must decide. Is it better to live happily ever after with the love of your life or stay with his favorite pasttime and childhood traditions?

Part of the reason this movie works so well is that the script really develops all the characters. The typical friend characters seen in most rom-coms for under fifteen minutes actually have a lot of development here, complete with backstories and distinct character traits. The writers also insert plenty of witty lines and a lot of heart and soul into this project, making it all the more enjoyable.

Drew Barrymore is absoluetely charming and adorable as Lindsay. Barrymore has always been one of my favorite actresses and she has the rare ability to light up the screen with a single smile. She gives an excellent performance and is very likable here. She makes her character very believable and I really felt for her when she was faced with some tough decisions. Jimmy Fallon, previously seen in last year's underrated TAXI, really proves here that he can carry a picture. He gives a smart, likable and well-rounded performance as Ben, and you can really see why he loves the game so much. This film also proves that while he is great in comedy, he can also handle dramatic moments as well. The pairing of these two actors togther creates a couple that you really root for and desperately want to work through their troubles.

Those looking for a typical Farrelly Brothers comedy will be disappointed by this film, mainly because it doesn't follow their typical formula. It's not a laugh-out-loud comedy at all. It's more of a heartwarming and cute romance with lots of comedic elements. FEVER PITCH is not only a tale of romance and true love, it's also a tale of tradition, change and growing up. It's a real crowd-pleaser that will have you cheering in the stands by the end. In closing, FEVER PITCH hits a home run. Not only is it a winning romantic comedy, it also has an excellent message and some great performances from the two leads. I couldn't recommend it higher.

9/10 (A-)

Spoke too soon. It turns out my theater has Fever Pitch now, and since I missed the 1:00 showing, I'll be going to the 4:30 showing of it. With gas prices+my van, I'd rather wait 2 1/2 hours rather than drive all that extra way just to see a movie.

Zingy, it played all the cards perfectly and managed to make the ending (which is typical of romcoms) really special by placing it at Fenway. I also like how they didn't really create obstacles that were in direct confrontation to the relationship. I'm sick of the characters thinking the hate eachother, or cheating, or that work punishes one of them for being in a relationship, or that there is serious jealousy, or anything like that. It made it much more ocnvincing, with much less eye rolling involved. It really was honest, and used absurd situations that we can relate to (only exaggerated) rather than creating out of this world situations.

Excellent movie, I think I teared up at the end. 8-[

I went to see this movie for a few reasons, but the main reason was because our very own awesome miss Libs recommended it, and I've come to know that her recommendations are as good as gold. Libs, if you please, I have two small requests before I continue. First, you wrote a totally impressive little review of Sin City (the information you retained from one viewing was remarkable), but you didn't post it in the review thread, and I really like reading those threads again at a later time, so if you could post your review there as well, it would be greatly appreciated. Second, you have always been the best of sports at the forums, always going to our silly fanboy movies. A few of those times, I felt that you went to be a part of the community, as you never seemed interested in movies like the Hulk, but posters like myself pestered so much, that you went anyway. You went to see 4 movies that I clearly remember being a pest about, Die Another Day, Daredevil, Hulk, and Sin City, and I'm not sure you would have otherwise, and you probably have me to thank for you hating the Hulk and wasting two hours of your time.

It has been noticed and appreciated that you go and see these movies, and are here to give us a perspective that isn't that of a fanboy, which is another reason I consider you the best member that we have. Payback isn't always a bitch, so when you get some time, I would like you to list every romcom/chick flick that you plan on seeing this year, and I promise to see every one of them within a week of when you do, and hopefully the same day, so you at least have one person that you know at the forums that's supporting your favorite genre. I will even try to convince some of the other guys to give them a try. You have definitely earned at least one supporter after 3 years of you trying out all kinds of our favorites, and I've become a fan enough of the genre to see them all, so make a list for me, please. Besides, I really want you to see Fantastic Four , as I value your opinion more than my own. Ok, onto my comments, which probably won't be as long as that was.

Fever Pitch was an excellent combination of chick flick meets guy flick. As soon as it started out, it brought me back to my childhood. What many people here don't know, is that I'm a baseball fanatic, but not quite on the level of Ben. I just don't talk sports online very much, as it would probably get ugly. I'm a little too passionate. Seeing Dennis Eckersley in a Red Sox uniform, seeing Yaz's #8, hearing Dwight Evans' name, ah, the memories. I was and am a die hard Yankee fan, but I always respected the Red Sox as a team. I got a real kick out of seeing Ben send Lindsey a dozen roses on Valentine's Day over the computer. A dozen Pete Rose heads was quite funny to see. (my favorite player ever!)

I never thought I would see the day when Manny Ramirez would have his name chanted in a movie. I remember the day he was drafted by the Indians, and I've followed his career since the minor leagues. I got chills. The love story was very well played by Jimmy Fallon, who was very good in this (surprisingly good, actually) and Drew Barrymore, who is quickly becoming the romcom queen. There was some very good chemistry between them, and I found there to be some very funny moments throughout the movie. I snorted when she was hit by that foul ball. 8-[ I loved hearing all of the curse of the Bambino talk, and hearing Bucky Dent and Bill Buckner mentioned in disgust. Seeing Ben watching the Buckner tape over and over had me rolling.

The ending was very romantic and touching, and every guy at these forums would really like this movie. It's as much a movie for the guys as it is for the girls. Of course, the inevitable ending hurt. As a Yankee fan, it was a terrible reminder of what happened last fall. I was crushed. It still was an excellent premise to base a movie off of, and I encourage all of you to check it out. Great fun!

Excellent romantic comedy. Barrymore and Fallon are perfect in their roles. If Fallon is as good as this in every movie role, he's set. He really is a lot like Sandler, only I can see me liking Fallon more, if he sets himself apart from the oddball roles that made him famous (somehow) on SNL.

What gets me is this film never fumbles at all, it keeps going right till the end, without anything that really derails it. Guess Who was good and funny, but a lot of times, I found myself a bit bored by the film. Here, I was dreading it to end. I've always loved Barrymore, and this is surely no exception at all. I also liked the mix of friends (we see her "girlfriends", and his oddball friends). And the ending? It could have so easily been a terribly clichéd ending, but it really wasn't. It was great. The ending could have been another "Anger Management" (which I seriously thought it might be for a minute), but it surely was nothing like that at all. Heck, I was a little sad myself, but the happy sad. Teary-eyed? You can't prove that!

Grade: A-

I actually do think it's because a lot of people here don't really like Jimmy Fallon very much.

Especially after, you know, Taxi.

Yes, it is surprising. Like Zingy said, it could be because of Jimmy Fallon. I HATED him on "Saturday Night Live", and I thought he was great here, so that surely should tell you something.
